The history of quilt patterns and blocks is well described in this lovely sampler. Instructions for sewing are well illustrated and stories that tell the origin of the different blocks are beautifully written . Easy to understand, enjoyable to read and lovely to look at, this book belongs in a quilters studio for reference to established patterns and inspiration for new ideas.

First quilt book I've read word-for-word for the history lessons!

If you're looking for a detailed how-to book of authentic Civil War block patterns, this is not it--but if you love interesting vignettes of history and Civil War stories, accompanied by colorful pictures of vintage 1920-1930s era blocks mostly made using Civil War reproduction fabrics, then you'll LOVE this book! I have been savoring each block and its story, as I missed the original blog entries on which the book is based. I love samplers, but as an experienced quilter, I VERY MUCH APPRECIATE that Brackman provides general cutting instructions in the introduction and only pertinent cutting details for individual blocks. (Though even a beginning quilter can attempt these blocks with a little help from a basic piecing guide.) I am already pulling FQs from from my stash, including some from Barbara's collections, and I can't wait to start my own sampler this summer!
