Ina is great on TV. I love the photos in her cookbooks--I have 2 of them. I've tried several recipes in this book, and they have failed miserably. They're not difficult--but they have fundamental flaws. It is infuriating to 'discover' bad recipes when entertaining on a special occasion. I was so upset, I almost threw the book in the trash (and I've never even contemplated that--I love my cookbooks). I like Sally Schneider's book, The Improvisational Cook, Martha Stewart, Tyler Florence, and Cook's Illustrated books much better--they deliver consistently good results.

    more from this reviewer

    Easy to follow recipes

A good cook book for do-able recipes. I made the chicken wings and while it was an easy recipe, I can't say they were bursting with flavor. Most of the recipes have ingredients that are readily avaliable and can be made without a lot of fuss. It is not a volumous book, I would like more to it as far as the number of recipes. Worth looking at though.

    I Also Recommend:

Excellent cookbook, but too similar to her first one

If you do not have Ina's first book, The Barefoot Contessa, you must buy this one. It is very good. However, if you do have her first book, buy this one as a gift for a friend. The recipes are easy and, as always, tasty. They are not however quite so "home style" as the book suggests. I make many of these recipes often, but I love cooking and making a mess in the kitchen. But not everyone does. These are not the sort of dishes most people would want to make after a hard day at the office. (For me it's relaxing.)

    Good But Not Her Best

Have to agree, this isn't as good as the first two but it's still pretty good. When you can find new recipes, which admittedly is not as often as you would like, they're good. This is sort of a companion to the show, which may be the problem.

Not quite up to the standard set previously

while I enjoyed reading the editorial content of this book, I didn't find it to meet the expectations I had from the previous 2 Barefoot Contessa books. Barefoot Contessa Parties! is a far superior work. It seems to me that many of the recipes are rehashed from the previous books: Roasted Winter Vegetables, Orange Pound cake. I have made some favorites over and over again from the original books: pecan squares, the cream cheese frosting, chicken chilli, corn chowder, apple crostada. I've owned this book since it's release date and to date have made only one recipe from it: The sagaponack corn pudding which was very enjoyable. The recipes aren't simple enough for everyday or special enough for special occasions. In short, I expected a GREAT book and got an average one.
