Leon Uris is a Great Writer. His books are full of life and based on historical events of significance.

When I first read this Uris novel about the Marine Corps, it did not grab my attention as much as some of his other more notable novels, e.g. Tha Haj, Exodus, Mila 18, etc. This novel, is slow moving in getting started, much like his Semper Fi novel (the history of the Corps.) Uris does indeed capture the overall feel of life in the US at the start of WWII, and moves on - ratherm, sort of plods into boot camp.
Given that several generations have come and gone, the "new" Corps is more technical in all aspects of military life and warfare technology, it is a good book to sit and read while at the beach or in front of the fireplace, but indeed not one I would strongly recommend, except as a last resort.
