I first picked this book up in a used bookstore when I was a senior in High School. Since that time I have read it several times. It is, without a doubt, one of the most entertaining books I have ever read. The story moves along quickly and the characters are fun and the villians are wonderfully clever and ruthless. This book is no pulitzer prize winner, but if you are looking for a book of pure fun and great story-telling, than this is the book for you. This book is a monster of a read but it's a monster of a good time. Enjoy!Show Less

L. Ron Hubbard wrote some terrific SF novels during the forties and fifties. His return to the genre of pulpy sci-fi is entertaining, but misguided. The satirical intent of the novel falls flat, and the climax is botched horribly...the main threat is pretty much defeated two-thirds of the way through the book, and the extended denoument reads like Hubbard is desparately attempting to pump up the word count of the novel. Unlike his earlier, and superior works (like SLAVES OF SLEEP, FEAR, TYPEWRITER IN THE SKY, and OLE DOC METHUSELAH, which I can recommend without reservation), Hubbard seemed to forget that brevity is the soul of wit with BATTLEFIELD EARTH. Forget Hubbard's Scientology and Dianetics, and all the baggage that entails, and pick up his earlier pulp SF novels. They're a big treat. But do yourself a favor and avoid the plodding doorstop of a book that is BATTLEFIELD EARTH.Show Less

    Best Book of All Time!

Disregard the reviews of anyone who rated this book less than a 5. Books don't get any better than this. Scientology has nothing to do with this book so don't let that keep you from reading this book. Nor does that horrible movie of Battlefield Earth that shouldn't even be called Battlefield Earth because it makes this great book look bad. Anyone who can read should read this book, and those who can't read should learn how to read so that they can read it (seriously!). This book is action-packed is written in an enjoyable writing style. Plus, it is very relevant to life. You feel for the characters and it is like you are in the story. Battle scenes have amazing description. Best book ever! Don't forget it! If your still unsure whether or not to buy it, you should buy it! End of discussion!

    I Also Recommend:

    Much better than the movie

Outstanding work by L Ron Hubbard. Combines action, adventure, minor romance, and the ins and outs of the corporate culture we live in. The movie by the same name could not do the book justice (and the movie only encompassed half the book); the detail and the explanations make the story vivid. This was a very enjoyable read for what it is - great science fiction.

Also recommended: Mission Earth series (10 volumes)

Great Modern Sci Fi - a Fun Read

Battlefield Earth (1982) is a book written by L. Ron Hubbard. It chronicles the life of Jonnie Goodboy Tyler, an adventurous sort who would put himself in danger rather than risk the life of a friend. An alien race, the Psychlos, have taken possession of the Earth and eradicated all humans except those living near areas of radiation. With the help of some Scots, Jonnie overcomes many obstacles to win back the Earth only to find that the Psychlos aren't the only alien race who has eyes on obtaining the earth and its human inhabitants.

This book is over 1000 pages in paperback and will keep you on the edge of your seat through each and every page. It is exciting from start to finish, although it does detail a few of the grosser activities of the Psychlos and their allies to help the reader understand the motivations behind the heroes' actions. Humor is appropriately sprinkled within and you connect with many of the characters, both human and alien.

Battlefield Earth is a fun read that is difficult to put down. The main idea of the story is don't give up, no matter what the circumstances. This reviewer gives it an 8 out of 10 rating.

    Excellent work by Hubbard

I am not a sci-fi fan. However, I have read Battlefield Earth twice and listened to the book on tape once. The journey we take with Johnny Good Boy Tyler as he moves from ignorant mountain dweller, to the savior of mankind is interesting and compelling. Each time I have read the book I couldn't put it down, went cover to cover.

Five stars because I read it five times

Battlefield Earth passes the tests of time and re-reading. I've read it on trains in England, beaches in Los Angeles, and planes in Indonesia and it still pulls you into the adventure even if you know the end. I especially appreciate the second half in which Earth's struggle for freedom turns from the battlefields of war to the equally dangerous battlefields of intergalactic banking and diplomacy. After 40 years of reading science fiction, Battlefield Earth is still in top three favorites.

    It was long....

The book begins rather boring ends rather boring tough some action is abundant in between. The plot is rather foolish. Like the only science fiction notion in the book is the presence of aliens. Let me brief you on it. The good boy was a neantherdal( really...) at the beginning. A year later he is designing a teleportation consule and meanwhile destroying a million planet empire...It is a rather crudely worked and less time spent form of mind work to me. Better spend your time on something else cause 33 hours is not just worth for this. Of course if you are on a year paid holiday you might give it a try!

    Clunky

The writing and charaters are incedibly one dimensional. The farther you get the more poorly written it becomes.

    Horrable

Unorganized narrative about characters you can't relate with, with cartoon like bad guys. I purchased it not knowing who the author was, and was confused that anyone sane would rate it that high. I realized after I did some reasearch that he invented a religion that costs a lot of money to be a member of.

    Good

Its really not a bad book. When you start reading it don't do so with the movie in mind, the movie was bad, expensice, and took very little that was good from the book. It is something I would reccomend most people to at least try. The only problems I had were some words/phrases/sentences that could have been changed or removed complely and the ending tended to drag a little.

    Good story, fun read

Classic style Science Fiction, with an interesting story line. While this book was well designed, it became a little long and a little preachy towards the end. One aspect that was interesting was reading the description of the imagined science. Since the story was written so long ago, technology that was only imagined at the time of the story have already been implemented or exceeded. It is fun to read what the 'future' looked like back when this story was written.

If you are just looking for a fun read, this will more than meet your expectations.

    Extremely Good Book!

This story has a way of kidnapping your mind and holding it to the last page. I could not put it down. I highly recommend this if you are into any kind of science fiction or complex story-line. Wonderful plot. Dazzling imagery. Impeccable continuity. Brilliant all-around book.

    I Also Recommend:

BATTLEFIELD EARTH: A Timeless Classic of Science-Fiction!

BATTLEFIELD EARTH: A SAGA OF THE YEAR 3000 was the first book I read by L. Ron Hubbard and it has since become one of my favorite books of all time! It is one of those timeless works like Frank Herbert's DUNE, Isaac Asimov's FOUNDATION TRILOGY and J.R.R. Tolkien's THE LORD OF THE RINGS that I will return to again and again throughout my life.

This incredible novel has all the heroic virtues and two-fisted action of the classic science-fiction stories from the Golden Age---without the constraints placed upon the author by the shorter formats of the pulp magazines.

    L. Ron Hubbard was a remarkably prolific writer during the 30's & 40's; Turning out stories in every pulp-fiction genre--from Air & Sea Adventure to Western, Oriental Action, Detective and , of course, Science-Fiction & Fantasy.

In 1950 Hubbard retired from fiction writing to pursue other interests. And in 1980 after a hiatus of 30 years he let his imagination soar to new heights in this extraordinary comeback novel.

This amazing book has everything you need in a great work of fantastic fiction. Noble heroes & truly despicable villains. Epic battles and pulse-pounding action. But at the heart of BATTLEFIELD EARTH lies a decency and morality that makes it more than just another disposable work of pulp-fiction. It will make you think and feel differently about what it means to be human.

It is easy to see why BATTLEFIELD EARTH has become a best-selling classic that transcends the SF genre. And despite it's length of over 1000 pages -- once you finish the book you will wish it had been even longer!

    The whole story.

This is one of the few works that has the whole story in one book. A really good book for a long winter or a rainy weekend.
