Incredible Journey
A friend had given me a book by Ms. Monroe and I found it engaging so I decided to try "The Beach House." I have picked up and set down many a book, but this author keeps me coming back for more and more.
"The Beach House" and it's sequel "Swimming Lessons" have characters that you will want to call your friends. They will live in your heart forever and you will want to follow their lives forever.
Ms. Monroe writes with such understanding of her loves, the loggerhead turtle and lowcountry of South Carolina, that she makes her readers share her compassion and concern. She weaves these themes throughout all her book, but this series with it's amazing women draw you in and carry you away.
Without going on and on, she writes of the lowcountry in such a way you can feel the humidity, taste the salt in the air, smell the sweetgrass and pluffmud! I have never been there, but feel like I have! Her characters are real and relatable. Their stories will entertain you and teach you without preaching.
Whether you are looking for a good book to curl up by the fireplace with or a great beach read, look no further! And from my understanding, she is working on a third in the series... CAN'T WAIT!1 out of 1 people found this review helpful.

Excellent Read!!
I love Mary Alice Monroe books and this is an excellent book to add to your library. I love the plots and the outcome of her stories. I liked it so much that I am going to read Swimming Lessons which happens to be the sequel.

Cozy read in a great ocean setting
Loved the ocean setting and the turtle info prior to each chapter. Mostly liked the cumpfy, cozy feeling the book gives you while reading it. The authors ability to draw you in and keep you there was appealing. Her character and setting descriptions enabled me to picture them vividly in my mind, especially Lovie. I felt like I would love to live there, to be a part of this warm family story.

I didn't want it to end.
I loved this book. I am a very picky reader and choose my books carefully. Since I love all East Coast beach or sea towns I thought I would try it. I LOVED it. I want to commend Ms. Monroe for writing about an over 40/never-married woman!! Finally... A writer who knows that we do indeed exist. Thank you!! Like Cara I am in my 40's and single. I had a father just like Stratton and a wonderful sweet mother just like Lovie who also had cancer. Thank You so much and I can't wait to read the sequel 'Swimming Lessons'.

Couldn't get into it
I picked up this book because of all the great reviews, but after reading the first quarter of the book, I had to put it down because I couldn't get into it. I thought it was very slow moving. Maybe I should have stuck it out, but I wasn't moved enough.

Outstanding Book
Having been born and raised in South Carolina, I always like to read books that are written by authors from SC or that are set in SC. This one really touch my heart, as my husband and I enjoy the Charleston SC area and hope to live in that area someday. I have always respected the Turtle nesting areas and hope to someday join the Turtle Patrol. This is a remarkable story.

True Heartwarming Story
This book is the best book I have read concerning the trials and tribulations of a mother/daughter relationship. I have recommended this book to many friends, and they all have raved about it. I intend to read more books by Mary Alice Monroe.

For the heart of daughters and their Mothers and to be Turtle Ladies
There has been so much learned from this book - regarding relationships of Mothers, daughters, siblings and family relationships- I have just experienced the same basic situation with my own Mother and her illness and I do miss her so very much. My heart, spirit and mind love being at the beach - The ocean breeze seems to cleanse my soul, refresh my spirit and blows the cobwebs from my mind. I have learned so much from this about the beloved Loggerhead Turtles - and am anxious to return to the beach to also become a Turtle Lady while there - such a bond with nature - great great book. My rental 'home' at the beach is along the very southern tip of North Carolina - while reading this book I have been able to take a mental trip to the beach again.

A Truly Wonderful Read!
I read this book about a year ago, loved it SOOOO much I passed the title on to many other friends all over the U.S. Many read it and loved it just as much as I did. We were so inspired by this book that about 2 weeks ago 10 of us met at Isle of Palms (where story takes place) to experience seeing logger head turtles hatch. WE succeeded, and are all THRILLED. The book was very educational, as well as being a wonderful story. I have not met one person who read this that did not absolutely LOVE it. Only problem is that it came out same time as James Patterson's Beach House which I cannot recommend, so PLEASE don't confuse the two!

Journey through the Ocean's Realm
This novel includes a journey about love, finding a path back to home and an adventrure between a mother and daughter's long lost relationship. The Beach House is an excellent book to take to the beach and read it as the ocean waves are breaking in the background or to sit in bed and imagine laying out in the hot sun. Mary Alice does an excellent job at describing each and every moment, to the point where the words become pictures that pop out to you. This book keeps the reader's attention and keeps the reader turning the pages.
