A WASTE of time - don't bother...
For a book the author states is a family history of George Halas and the Chicago Bears, there is more about Pat McCaskey than there is about Halas and the Bears. Although the book starts with the life of George Halas and describes how the Bears team started, it is superficial and contains inaccurate information such as the number of people who died on the Eastland disaster which would have been easy to verify by checking the official Eastland Disaster website. The book contains nothing new about either Halas or the Bears one would expect from being written by a family member. The book contains a section titled, "In the Bears Den". Here are a couple of stories within it. "Divine Intervention - I attended a Bears Bible study on a night in early April 1979, when the wind was so strong that windows were blown out of the John Hancock Center. During the drive home, my car died. Fortunately, some kind youngsters in a pickup truck gave me a ride back to Doug and Nancy Plank's home. The Planks loaned me one of their cars and then met the tow truck at my car." "Stolen Goods - My family and I were out on Thanksgiving Day in 1993 to watch the Bears defeat the Lions at the Pontiac Silverdome. While we were away, thieves broke into our home and stole my Super Bowl Ring. But thanks to some great police work, I got the ring back a few days later." Could someone please explain the correlation of these antidotes to the history of George Halas or the Bears? Do they have any value other than filling a few more pages? Approximately half the book is about the McCaskey's. I was not interested to read about the life of Ed or Virginia nor did I purchase this book to read about Pat McCaskey's grade school, high school and college athletic career or how he met his wife. I wanted to learn more about George Halas and the Chicago Bears. I did learn something. I already knew the McCaskey's have no idea of how to successfully run a professional football team and now I know they can't write a book about one either! Was this review helpful?
