There is something quite wonderful about Karma Wilson's "Bear" books. I never tire of reading them and I always look forward to the new ones. In fact, I remember when this book was first added to our library collection. Another children's librarian and I nearly arm-wrestled to determine who would read it first for Story Time.

Karma Wilson's "Bear" books, besides being entertaining reading, would make an excellent study on how to write a children's book in verse. Her rhymes are not forced and her meter feels natural. The story she tells would be just as strong without the verse, but the rhyming scheme does make her writing all the more memorable. Because this is a "Bear" book, there is a little suspense and a happy resolution.
I love the way Jane Chapman illustrates the Bear and his friends. Bear looks like a bear, Badger like a badger, Mole like a mole, and so on, but there is so much personality and expression in the animals you can tell what they are thinking even without the text. This is a wonderful quality in children's books for transitional readers like my four-year-old son. He can tell me the story based on the illustrations that is not so very different from the printed one. -

After reading it he was convinced that owls live in holes. We would go outside and look for owl holes (chipmunk holes in actuality) and say "hooo-hoooo!"
It sparked his love for owls and he is going to be one for Halloween this year!
Highly recommend this and Bear Wants More! Karma Wilson has some great books! -
We LOVE the Bear Series
I'm so glad that this book came out in Board Book format. We love all of Karma Wilson's bear books and enjoy rereading them to our 1 year old son nightly. He enjoys all of the animals and the rhymes are fun and catchy. We give these as gifts all the time and can't wait to see more come out in board book as well.

We love the Bear book series!!
In kindergarten, my son came home from school and told me all about Bear Snores On. He just loved it! Around Christmas, we went to a book fair and he saw "Bear Stays Up for Christmas" and we just had to get it! We now own every one of the Bear books (1 1/2 yrs later) and we will still pull them out to read. Both of my kids just love them and never seem to get tired of them!!! My son really related to "Bear's New Friend" when a new boy recently started at his school and was a bit shy. Great book!!

Bear is always a hit
We read this one -- and two other 'Bear' books, 'Bear Snores On' and 'Bear Wants More' almost every night. My son is 2 years and 4 months and listens to every word. The pictures are enchanting and the rhythm delights.

Mom's favorite childrens books
This book keeps my childs attention. It is very rhythmic. Bear's New Friend is a perfect title and it is fun for the kids to anticipate who his new friend will be.
