Much Needed Affirmation for Critical Decision Making in My Son's Treatment

My 7 year old has primarily small bowel Crohn's Disease and we were trying to make the very painful choice of a biologic medication or enteral nutrition for his next treatment. He was steroid dependant and that kept him from growing. He was also taking an immunosuppressant that was not working to keep him in remission.

I had searched the internet for medical publications, and even met with a specialist who is considered one of the top rated in the US for pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease for a second opinion on treatment. The enteral nutrition was recommended but not exactly embraced.

When I quite literally stumbled upon this book, it was much needed affirmation and refreshing affirmation that we were making the right choice for my son. It blessed the treatment by compiling years of published research and international data in an easy to read, layperson friendly format. The question becomes, why would you choose a 'big-gun' treatment or surgery before trying a much safer method, that allows children to grow and mature normally.

My son began this treatment on April 8, 2010 and is now in remission from Crohn's Disease. I brought this book to the hospital with us to share with medical students and residents since no one had any experience with this treatment.

Ben is now gaining weight and off all medications (after only 4 weeks). The treatment is easy and well tolerated by my son. Every parent with a child with Crohn's Disease should be given this book at the time of diagnosis. Some day, this treatment will be the first line choice for Pediatric Crohn's Disease in the US as it is in Europe, Japan and Canada.

Author shares her extensive knowledge and does help readers ... Beat Crohn's!

A clearly written book for people with Crohn's who want relief from pain without taking drugs which have lasting side-effects.

Describes a treatment commonly prescribed in Europe and Canada, but little used in the U.S. Its effectiveness is compared with that of other treatments in a balanced way.

Clear and useful for anyone with Crohn's disease.

What Your Doctor Never Told You

This book is a true godsend. It is the most comprehensive book I have ever seen on the topic of using elemental diet as a treatment for Crohn's disease. This healthy and effective way to beat back the disease is not well known among crohn's patients and doctors in the United States. However, the treatment is widely used in Europe, Canada, Japan and Israel, and medical studies show that it is a highly effective treatment even for people who have failed other medications and have severe disease.

This treatment has been a miracle for my son who had steroid-refractory crohn's disease. After years of suffering, he found this tretment and has now experieneced several years of good health. Although we already knew that the treatment was effective for him when we received this book, I still read it cover to cover. From a patient's perspective, there are still so many questions that you want answers to -- what kind of formula should be used, how much of the formula is needed, how should other foods be reintroduced? One by one this book answers each question based on the best available medical data and in a way that is easy for a lay person to understand.

Not only do I count this book as an essential addition to my own bookshelf, but I have ordered extra copies to share with friends whose kids have this dreaded disease as well. If you are looking for a proven, effective and safe way to treat disease, this is the book.
