Before Midnight. Blood Prince Series (Book One). Jennifer Blackstream
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book Reviews.
This sounded interesting, something a bit different from the usual paranormal romance. Its a kind of retelling of Cinderella, not an update but a remake, a story to include werewolves. Take note: the prologue is very important. It doesn't seem to relate to this book until the end, and then I realised that its a theme that draws this book into an overall story with further retelling of famous tales.
Its quite “light” in feel, no real dark, strong emotions or deep, heavy sensuality. Its very true to the original Cinderella story in feel, with there being all the elements of step sisters, wicked step mother, handsome prince, even the “slipper” and the fairy godmother have undergone a transformation. Its was an interesting read but...not one that really resonated with me, and I won't look for more.
I guess this novel is perfect for those who like a quick, light and easy paranormal read, with an element of romance and a surprise in the tail :) I tend to want deeper, heavier reads and thankfully we have authors that write to suit all our tastes. I didn't really enjoy this but that doesn't mean it wasn't well written, it was, the plots all line up neatly and there are no unanswered questions – or horrible cliffhangers, even though this is clearly a series. Its simply a matter of me wanting something different from my reading materials.
Stars: two and a half, I didn't dislike the story, I just didn't really like it either for the reasons given.

This story started out great. The Prologue had me hooked, and I couldn't wait to read more, despite the fact that Cinderella has never been a fairy tale that I'm particularly fond of. However, with a twist like the one in this retelling (Werewolves? Yes, please, I'll read it!), I didn't want to miss it.

Etienne and Loupe have a nice bit of chemistry between them. Granted, I felt that the pace of their relationship went by a tad fast, but, still, I was able to feel the emotion from them. I liked that he had his temper and that she had her spirit, but I would have liked to see more struggle in their story. I mean, come on, he's a werewolf and she's a...cursed, werewolf who skins wolves. You'd think that when he found this out (which, as far as I'm concerned, he never did--I promise that I checked a few times and I never saw it--I kept waiting for it, as a matter of fact) there might have been more of a barrier for them to be together, even if it was a tiny one. With this being a retelling of a fairy tale, why not throw in a little extra drama to heighten the telling even if there are already a few bad guys?

And the ending was slightly rushed. You're going to tell me that no one in the palace realized there was a mini-battle going on outside? No guards? The king and queen had no idea? Servants? It was bam, wam, thank you ma'am and everyone was dead. No no no, while I'm not saying that I wanted to read in explicit detail how everyone was killed and maybe ripped apart by the wolves, I did want more from that scene. It was a big moment in the story.

Plus, it wouldn't have hurt to drag out Etienne's plan to get Arabella's cooperation in letting him free of their blackmailed marriage by marrying her off to the guy she loved. Who was he? Why did her mother not want her to marry him? Where was she after Danette came to the palace to lure Loupe and Etienne away to their deaths?

And for that matter, what is up with Maude Tessier's family? Are they barbarian warriors or are they psychopathic assassins?

All I'm saying, is that I wanted to explore the story a little more.

That aside, it was a nice and light, fun read--one of those books you just feel good and all comfy and relaxed while you're reading it. I liked the way that the author decided to write the story, using the werewolf as the themed creature that, honestly, I would not have expected to see in a fairy tale-retelling of Cinderella.

And as a note, the wolf pups stole the show.

I'm looking forward to reading the second and third books, and I particularly cannot wait to read the angel's story. That one captured me from the start of this first series' installment.

    Hello

The writing style or maybe the plot had me skimming some of the 130 pages. The prologue was interesting and suggested an interesting book. But the story with the crying Cinderella type werewolf that skinned other wolves dragged. So not purchasing any other of the short stories with teenage antics and adult sex. When in doubt submit and cry and cry and cry, and when in dire danger, stop and have sex on the forest floor. Really? The plots suggested interesting stories but the writing didn't provide the follow through.

    NP...original Cinderella/Warewolf twist

The beginning drags quite a bit but once past the first 10 to 20 pages you are into the real story. Those first pages are never really explained. However, the originality of this Cinderella twist is well thought out and entertaining. Great free book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
