I saw a TV program about the making of this version of WSS many years ago. Bernstein had Carreras in tears because Carreras wanted to do another take and Berstein said the last was fine. I missed seeing the tryout in Philadelphia before WSS went to Broadway "who wants to see a modern day Romeo and Juliet". I have since seen the show as many as 200 times in all media and listened to it by all types of artists. My absolute favorite is this version being played and sung in the manner which Berstein intended it. My understanding of the story being that it would never had such a success on Broadway had it originally been presented in this form. "Again, Who wants to see a modern day Romeo and Juliet?" As much as I love Porgy and Bess, Show Boat, My Fair Lady, South Pacific and on and on. This is my favorite version of the WSS music. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
