The best yet!

I changed to a vegan diet about nine months ago and have read everything I can get my hands on and this is the best yet!! The recipes are great and not difficult to prepare, and a wonderful addition to my cookbook collection.

I have to admit, this book disappointed me a bit. I'd never encountered the Shannon's blog, so I was unprepared for the fact that pretty much every recipe uses a pre-processed meat replacement. I've nothing against them - great for convenience and all - but they're also really spendy. I don't generally have $15-20 to blow on a single meal. Additionally, where are the vegetables? Being vegan doesn't turn you into a rabbit, but I'm certainly fond of my veggies and disappointed in the slim section on vegetable sides.

Overall, this is a solid book for anyone with a budget for expensive vegan meats and/or the time to hunt up some of the rarer ones (Match and May Wah are almost impossible to find on the West Coast, and the shipping is insane). The deserts are decent, though again, they use huge amounts of expensive non-hydrogenated margarine that could easily be replaced with cheaper canola oil. The book also reads like a blog, with overly long notes that are unrelated to the recipe and annoying to wade through, and a lot of the soups and such consist of "throw everything in the pot and turn on the heat", which doesn't work for a lot of them. I have to say I wouldn't recommend this book over some of the others available. A for effort, but C in execution.
