    Basic and Practical

This is a big cookbook of comfort food that includes over 200 recipes for hearty slow cooker meals, casseroles, pasta dishes, one-dish dinners such as soups and stews, plus appetizers, and desserts. Classics such as meat loaf, beef stew, and chicken noodle soup are included along with dishes with a modern twist including lemon and parmesan crusted salmon, roasted cauliflower with asiago and orange, and pizza chicken.

I tried two recipes, Chicken Artichoke Casserole and Beef Taco Rice Skillet. Both were easy and inexpensive to make, used ingredients easily found in my local grocery store, and most importantly, my family liked them. I have several other recipes tagged to try including Potato-Topped Meatloaf Casserole and Raspberry Bread Pudding. I like the versatility of casseroles and slow cooker meals plus the fact that many of these recipes can be easily doubled with a portion frozen for future meals.

The introductory section has helpful tips on using a slow cooker, a suggested menu planner using recipes from the book, and nutrition information and food exchanges are given for each recipe. There are many colorful photographs which I always appreciate. The recipes are easy but even more experienced cooks will appreciate this resource for great comfort food.
