Loved the original series. As you got further through the twelve, you could tell as a writer Shan was getting very good. Since then I have read Procession of the Dead, and purchased Thin Executioner, but only read the former so far. It was good, but I'll hold judgement until that series continues further. In terms of this book, I couldn't have asked for anything better. Learning the back story of Larten, in this book from early childhood, was fantastic. Shan's writing as improved even farther. This book takes you from Larten as a child to a 'young' vampire, following his master around as we were used to Darren following Larten. Lots of familiar names will appear, and lots of familiar places. If you haven't read the originals, you will probably miss a lot of references, and he does skim over some topics at a high level, assuming you know more details than are contained in the text. Overall though this was a pleasure to read, and I cannot wait for the continuation of this tale. Although labeled as children/teen reading (which I am not a member of either age group), this is a story for all ages (from the original twelve books through this title). Could not recommend more.

Good author.

I love shan's work. I read the sample and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the book.

Lacks enthusiasm. Yet it's future is bright.

This book fails in being one of Shan's great adventure novels. The content is less of a journey, containing mostly general background information about Crepsley's childhood. If you are a Cirque Du Freak fan, I highly recommend getting this book along with the second book of this series, to get a better understanding of the future journey. Shan, like always, adds some spice to the finale of his book, making a reader more intrigued to read and learn more about Crepsley's journey. In total, the unknown past of the Cirque Du Freak series starts off disappointingly slow with little action-packed conflicts. The Saga of Larten Crepsley will tie all the facts together about what happened before Shan entered the Realm of the "creatures of the night". Though now I am wondering, what about Darius who will inevitably be in the aftermath of the "Cirque Du Freak" series. That would be much more interesting to read, with Mr. Tiny sending his devilish schemes to reestablish the future of his dreams.
