K-3 - When it is time for a small yellow puppy named Biscuit to go to bed, Biscuit finds many excuses to stay up. This timeless tale of Biscuit's young owner trying to get her puppy to sleep mimics that of a parent and a child's many bedtime requests. Although the book is aimed at the reading skills of k-3, even younger children would enjoy having the story read to them. The theme is very relatable to young children who may want "just one more thing" before bed. Readers follow Biscuit's girl as she patiently provides her puppy with all of his before bed desires.
Biscuit is a transitional, My First level, book from the I Can Read! series by HarperCollins and also the first in a series of Biscuit books by Alyssa Satin Capucilli. The "My First" level is meant to be read along with the emergent reader. The book contains mostly three and four words long sentences with simple sight words without any surprising descriptors. The vocabulary should be very familiar to young children. The book has enough repetition to familiarize children with words and gain reading confidence, while introducing new activities on each page. The brief night time rituals keep the story interesting and should appeal towards a child's curiosity about what will happen next.
Illustrator Pat Schories uses muted primary colors to set the evening tone. The illustrations are simple yet realistic, illustrating the caring actions that meet the puppy's requests. Reinforcing the text, the illustrations give clues to the words the young emergent reader is learning and captures the patience and love between the girl and her puppy.

Cute, very simple and repetitive

This is a cute story about a puppy who doesn't want to go to sleep. The illustrations are nice, but I found the writing itself really simple and repetitive. Not the most fun to read out loud. But, my 2-yr-old daughter asks for this book often. At bedtime she says, "...

But, my 2-yr-old daughter asks for this book often. At bedtime she says, "Biscuit! Biscuit!" when she wants us to read it. We do add more to the story, and point out different objects in the illustrations and ask what they are to get a little more from reading it. I would recommend it as a storytime book for very young toddlers.
