    Good book, bad edition

Blood Music managed to thoroughly question my ideas about what is and isn't possible. My initial reaction to its ideas about biological computers were that they were quite far-fetched, but upon further examination seemed intirguingly possible. On the other hand its ideas about quantum physics are pure specutlation--entertaining to be sure, but nothing to take too seriously.

The plot was interesting, if a little dry in the telling--Bear manages to turn the prospect of 2 million angry protesters camped outside of a genetics lab into a near-footnote, but other passages are quite engaging. Of more concern was the characterization--some of the caracters were very interesting, other less so, and the character of Suzy was, in my mind, done very poorly. Though she is repeatedly declared to be "slow" and numerous implications are made that she is at least learning disabled if not slightly mentally disabled, she does not act in a fashion that betrays anything other than perfectly normal if not slightly above average intelligence. She may be relatively unintelligent compared the the mental giants the book is otherwise filled with, but her portrayal as a "dumb" character was wholly unconvincing.

The real killer with this book is not the story but the edition. This particular printing of the book is filled with an apalling number of errors, many times worse than any other book I have ever purchased. The book was obviously scanned from anoter printed text with some sort of text-recognition software, and then nobody bothered to proofread the result. For example, the letter combination "cl" is frequently misprinted as "d", and words are constantly mispelled or totally mangled, sometimes quite consistently ("in" is noticably often replaced with "hi") and large amounts of punctuation are simply missing entirely. I would *strongly* recommend against buying this book from this publisher (and possibly any book from this publisher, if they are all this bad) unless no alternative was avilable.

    No proofreading

BN, and indeed the author, should be embarrassed to be charging money for this seriously defective poduct. Great story but FULL of the most obvious typos. If such editions are the future of books, forget it.

Really, $9.99 for an ebook of an 1985 paperback? With all the transfer copy errors reported, I'm sure there wasn't much cost in editors. Did B&N notice their cost is several dollars more than Amazon and that used paperbacks are less than $2.00? What, because we want to use an ereader we can be screwed to pay $10 instead of $2?

    Good book, bad publisher

This was definitely a book worth reading, but it was soured a little by a very bad transfer to electronic form. Words like clean appeared as dean, and half the time him showed up as nun. Great book, terrible publisher.

    Good book; some e-issues

Very intriguing and thought-provoking book Bear is able to introduce some pretty heavy science and speculation while still developing engaging characters and a storyline that keeps the pages turning.

I did find a number of issues with the NOOK version, such as typos, dropped words, etc., but it wasn't bad enough to be a nuisance.

    Awesome visionary SF

I read this 12 years ago and I still remember it. The ideas only become more pertinent as time goes by - we're cracking the code of life, so what does the future of humanity look like? More and more, Bear's thoughts resonate with the present we find ourselves living in.
