The Criminalpol's Aurelio Zen Returns

'Blood Rain' is crime fiction raised to the level of fine art by a brilliant British author whose work must be making Wilkie Collins and A. Conan Doyle smile in their graves. 'Blood Rain' is richly textured, lyrical, quirky, spooky as hell and as redolent of Dibdin's beloved Italy as though each page had been sprayed by a fine mist of Gocce di Tartufo Bianco. What a shame that such powerful work is marketed as genre fiction. Nothing on the bestseller lists exceeds this fine book in mystery, suspense, finesse and narrative power. Five stars are not enough.

This was a bit disappointing though I'm giving it a "good enough" review. First of all it is too brief a story. The book listed at 288 pages is really something less than 220. It really did need those extra pages to develop a conclusion especially as the author gets caught up in some rather lengthy descriptions which seem to me to be off point and somewhat distracting. Secondly, the story ends in a cliff hanger. One will have to go to the next in the series to sort out what happened, something akin the watching a Saturday morning series as a child. I'm not a child and I expected, perhaps wrongly, the book to be a complete self contained story. My mistake! However, If a complete story is what you are expecting then don't make the same mistake I did.
