Lindsay Townsend's Blue Gold was not what I expected! I've read Townsend's historical romances and have always enjoyed the characters and the detail that puts me right into where they are, and I enjoyed the same qualities in Blue Gold. The scenery is vivid. The characters are full and unique and real. The history was researched so well, I was often right there in Ancient Egypt with 'Serre and Ramose and Kasa and Tiyi watching as they battled evil and grew and adapted to war and near famine and treachery.

There's plenty of continual action on several fronts with several stories all pulled together in one location at one time in history, interconnecting and woven like a lot of sturdy threads that merge to create one wow-factor historical episode.

I'm impressed with the way there are so many main characters and yet it works well. The reader changes her mind about many of them now and then, changing loyalties along with the character changes and growth and revealed secrets. I loved how the Egyptian gods are humorously featured but I won't give spoilers.

At times, I got a little confused, especially in the first half while trying to adjust to a world and terms with which I wasn't familiar enough. I love history but Ancient Egypt isn't one I've studied other than the mythology. By the second half, though, things cleared for me and I was swept right away.

Townsends' Blue Gold is historical fiction with both literary and romantic elements, which made it right up my alley. I wouldn't have minded if it was a bit longer with the beginning more filled in, but I do realize long fiction is not terribly in vogue these days. Townsend put a whole range of emotional, cultural, and psychological nuances in a mid-length book that leaves a powerful image of a powerful world with the reader after the book is finished. I'm sure a second read would bring even more of it out.

I only hope the author creates more of these multi-faceted widely encompassing worlds into being.

(I wish I could add another half star because I'm wavering between 4 & 5.
