Nicola is masterful in this first novel (two more of the same main character follow). Her descriptions of not only the inner turmoil and struggle of Aud, as well as her grasp of the land and its people are truly amazing. While there are some very difficult scenes and circumstances the story alone is compelling enough to keep the pages turning. Two thumbs up for your exceptional work with this character. I loved it.

Could be my new fave author!!

Reading about the adventures and heartaches of Aud is exciting and engaging. One empathasizes with her as she navigates a world for which she is perhaps too skilled. The story includes adventure, intrigue, mystery, action and romance. All of the characters are fully developed, the plot is intricate, and the book is just one I'd recommend!

    Xena uber in disguise?

This brilliantly written, but ultimately heartbreaking novel telegraphs its dark intentions from the very first page, first meeting, but I stayed awake very late turning pages in fascination as the tragedy unfolded. It's almost as if the lead character in order to set herself up as a brooding, moody, nordic amazon in an obviously projected series of novels allows the self-fulfilling prophecy of doom to take place. I have to ask WWXD? This one disturbed my sleep and broke my heart, but it will remain, I fear, unforgettable. The prose is simply exquisite. A lot less erotica than titillated at, but what's there is 'cherce.' The tragic hero fails, but it's all happening on borrowed time anyway. This woman can write.

    A breathe of fresh air!

Nicola Griffith takes a simple story and turns it into too a work of art. With it's visual descriptions of the sun reflecting off the snow,to the feel of Aud's ribs being cracked,to the intense emotions between Aud and Julia. This book has it all romance, action, supense.Everything you'd want in a great novel and more!

Kept me glued to the pages!!

Could not put the book down. Griffith's writing is moving and powerful. Would like to see more of this type of work from her. Her writing is gripping and intense. A must own for any collection.
