The book started VERY slowly and I wondered if it was worth sticking with the story. But it picked up toward the end of the first disc and I really enjoyed the rest of the tale. Great images in my mind of what it must've been like for women on the SW coast of Washington during the late 1800s. The romance was no surprise; it was just a matter of time before it was consumated. But I was caught off-guard by the big reveal--that's what good and great writers do for their readers. Leonie seemed to be a strong, independent woman yet she always deferred to her husband's wishes. When her stepson, Daniel, arrives at the homestead, he makes her see that her opinions matter, that she has value as a person on her own, not just as his father's wife. I'm glad I stuck with the first bit of the book because it ended up being a thoroughly enjoyable story. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
