Great for Bedtime for Elementary Age Children

Or holiday reading, too. This could be good reading for children around 9-12. I discovered this series with my daughter when she was in 2nd grade, and read it to her. It's a charming series about some ordinary well behaved children who must live with an older relative.

At one point of their lives they're found in a Box Car which offered a name for this children's series. The themes are timeless. It's full of fun, and I really like how the older children step in to take care of the younger ones, giving children a great example of good discipline. One favorite scene is when the older relative allows them to go on an island to sleep over with cookouts. The children are so well behaved they enjoy the outing immensely and find clever ways to overcome challenges during the experience.

Personally, nowadays, I'm one to always ensure my child is well supervised with reputable adults around if I myself cannot be present, and when she goes off to day camps with no brothers or sisters, a cellular makes me feel comfortable that all will be well. It's a great conversation starter for "What would you do if..." sorts of talks.

Now, when some see the amazing length of the series, that can be staggering. I know of know other series that is longer. The books can be read out of order. Some families collect different editions over generations and between families, as I have observed, so it's really a special bargain, and a fun exercise for children's minds. Reading at a higher level to children helps them arrive at reading at that level easily themselves. Then, when not pushed to always read at the top of their level, they tend to take off and have a more positive attitude towards learning, and progress as they are ready to blossom linguistically. It avoids academic burn out and allows them to see, allowing them to excell and look forward to more reading.

It's unique to see so many age groups represented in one favorite series. Nowadays, often children feel loads of peer pressure as they don't have a chance to have interactive conversation between children, and adults as in this novel, and touching on such a theme, I believe has been a help for my child to be peer pressure proof, though she has no brothers or sisters, and neighborhood friends have moved away, so things like this helped reinforce her gift for interacting with people of different ages, not just her own age.

Each book is like a cameo of special adventurous playtime. I wish all children could live in communities as presented here.

    A must have for children

This is one of the best series that I read as a child. I loved reading about this family and how well they worked together. A great series for an elementary child who is wanting to be read to or starting to read on his or her own.

I love these books. I was introduced to them in 4th grade I'm now 23 years old, and a teacher, and any time someone needs a book to read, I recommend The Boxcar Children.

Not a child in the conventional way...

When I was a little girl many, many, many years ago, the best stories I ever read were in Ms. Werner's Boxcar Children series. I have wonderful memories of reading to my younger siblings during our nighttime routine. I have even had the pleasure of sharing her stories with my nieces and nephews. I lost count of all the times I have given one of her books as gifts to the children of family and friends. Ms. Werner's style of writing is so descriptive and enjoyable, I can still imagine what her spice cake must taste like :-) A great series for all ages. Makes me want to go back to easier, more simple days.

What a great set of book!

I ordered this boxed set as a present for my niece's birthday and my sister said she can't wait every night to read them together with her. What a sweet set of books. They will definitely be kept in their family throughout the years to come.

And if you are looking for another wonderful book that your child will love reading that is also written with a great moral overtone, then I'd like to recommend a book called, Smitty's Cave Adventures. It is an action adventure book about a boy who has incredible cave adventures all while learning valuable life's lessons. It's great for ages 9-12 and will keep the reader glued to the thrilling story! I recommend it as a great summer reading book. The kids can't stop talking about it. They loved this book! They have a book club and it was the talk of the group!
