However, after I read this book I decided it was my absolute favorite book of all time. I have given it as a gift numerous times and I cannot wait until my son is old enough to read it!

Don't read.

I expected a thrilling adventure of a boy somehow catching a murderer with his father but got a dull story of a pretty ordinary year at the beginning and found myself wanting to stop and quit on the book.

    young highschool reader

this book was one of the most boring books i have read. i read this book for my summer reading and i had to force myself to read it. the first 2 or 3 chapters were actually pretty good but after that it was boring and monotonous. the author said alot of things in a ton ofchapters that he could have said in 4 or 3. this book was very very dragged on and got to the point where i really couldnt even read an entire chapter in one sitting. this is not a book i would recommend and i would never read it again.

    Maybe it's a boy thing?

Well, I wouldn't say it was a bad book, per se but it certainly can't touch Dandelion Wine, which is the obvious inspiration for the story as well as the style. Why read the imitation when you can read the real thing? I found the book quite syrupy and mawkish. How self-reflexive can you get?! And also, more than once in the book the protagonist who is telling the story in first person, tells us what others are thinking? Without changing the point of view. The book is way too long and i've seen it all before. How may quirky, kooky characters can I cram into this little town? He should have stuck with the murder mystery, it was far more interesting than the kid's story. One final note, the constant reference to 'why I like to write, and see how I grew up to be this great writer....blah.
