Hockey fans delight!
If you love a great love story and or hockey you will want this book. It gives you a behind the scenes look at the organization of professional sports and the personal aspects of how to manage working and your personal life. Real problems, real pain, and great characters. I cant wait for the next book in the series. A great read. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. This had so many elements of the classic romance novel. The girl falls in love with her brother's best friend. The girl has issues and turns to the hot guy friend and they fall in love. Big tough guy has a tender heat. But even with all of these things, this story is so much more than any one of those things. It is deep and intense and emotionally raw.Was this review helpful? This book focuses on Dana and Eric, friends since childhood. Eric is the best friend of Dana's older brother Brenden, growing up together playing hockey. Eric has gone pro, and Brenden plays for the affiliate team for that same franchise. Hockey is a central part of all of their lives. Dana, too, played hockey until something happened to her that ended her career and changed her life forever.
Dana is damaged, emotionally raw and insecure and living in an almost constant state of terror. She has spent years in therapy trying to get past what was done to her. But she just can't let it go. So she turns to Eric, her brother's best friend and one of the few men she thinks she can trust enough to help her. The depth of Dana's pain jumped off the page and straight into my heart. Eric is the epitome of a true man in the way he supports, protects, and helps Dana. There are some truly heart wrenching moments in this book, moments that just made me hurt for Dana.
And to top it all off, there was hockey! I love me some hockey and I love that the hockey in this book wasn't just fluff decorating the story, but a real part of the story. Sometimes books with a decided theme (cooking, crafting, etc.) tend to overwhelm the story with that theme. I love that the hockey is just another facet to a fantastic story.
Things to love...
--Eric. He is kind and patient with Dana and their romance is beautiful to watch unfold.
--The hockey. I love the hockey aspect. It was well-researched and added a great premise to a romance story.
--How Dana's trauma was handled. It was handled with reality and respect and I loved that.
My Recommendation: Contemporary romance it is. Light and fluffy it is not. There are real issues explored, real trauma, real emotions and pain.

Really great! Eric is so sweet with Dana and their relationship
Really great! Eric is so sweet with Dana and their relationship and growth was beautiful to watch. Dana could be really stubborn but it just makes you hope even stronger for them to work out their issues. I'll definitely be reading the rest of this series. Was this review helpful? Breakaway hit home with me on so many levels, and it made me appreciate the story all the more. Dana is a young woman that had a bright future in hockey until one terrible night after a game when she was brutally raped by a group of men. She is a former shell of herself for the obvious reasons, but she knows that she needs to overcome her fear of men to live again. After seven years of self-imprisonment she has come up with a plan to begin the healing process. She travels to visit her brothers best friend, Eric to enlist his help. Eric has always loved Dana but knows that nothing could ever come from that love, but when she shows up asking for help he cannot say no. What is supposed to be a courtship of healing becomes a full-out romance that neither Dana or Eric can prevent from happening or the heartbreak that could come from it.
Breakaway is very emotional, and you feel for Dana every step of the way. Your heart breaks for her when she try’s to overcome the things we take for granted; like receiving a touch on the arm. Eric is a wonderful man that wants to do right by the woman he secretly loves, his best friend (her brother) and the hockey team he is captain of. Not everything always goes right, but he truly fights to make it right at the cost of his happiness sometimes. The cast of characters is great and not only are their some scenes that make you want to cry their are hilarious scenes that leave you smiling. I recommend readers to read this book, it’s uplifting and romantic. I am really looking forward to this series.

I really enjoyed Breakaway. The love and patience Eric had for Dana was endearing and sweet. Some moments I felt badly for both of them and what they each endured but their determination to endure it together tugged at my heart. I rooted for them from beginning to end.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
I'm not very knowledgeable about hockey so there were a lot of instances where I was completely lost. That was the only real drawback for me. This was my first book by Catherine Gayle but I'd be very interested in reading more of her work.

One of my favorite books in a long time. Eric was such an amazin
One of my favorite books in a long time. Eric was such an amazing hero - both strong yet heartbreakingly tender with Dana, the wounded heroine. Prepare to feel butterflies when these two come together. Seriously - they have more chemistry than Walter White! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
