Readers familiar with the sweeping space opera of _Startide Rising_ or the urgent rebellion of _The Uplift War_ will find a whole new slice of life in the 'Uplift Universe' to appreciate here. This book presents an intimate portrait of six species living a hidden and illegal life together on a verdant world. Each species has turned its back on its starfaring heritage to live in an enforced rustic idyll, but the past is about to catch up with them all- and their tiny world will soon be enveloped in a chaos which might threaten every sentient species in the Five Galaxies. I deeply enjoyed this novel's intricate prose style, constant inventiveness, and well-developed glimpses into alien society and psychology. Readers who hunger for a deeper examination of 'otherness' after the brief sketches of alien psychology offered in earlier Uplift novels will find it here- vividly and believably rendered. This is an auspicious start to a highly enjoyable trilogy.

Very Tolkienesque in scope, theres about three good novels in this thing. Most sf writers labor to invent one convincing alien species, in this book Brin has /six/! Breathtaking in scope and depth its only flaw may be how dense the book is. This isn't "gadget" sf, Brin has created very detailed societies and fully developed individuals. If your tastes tend towards those huge immersive Lord of the Rings style novels you'll be enthralled.

If you love science fiction, read this & the next two in the series.

A fine story, well written. Brin has created a fantastic world that is somehow entirely convincing. A must read.
