motivational
Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud, A Memoir by the legendary Dr. Cornel West opened my eyes to the life of one of the people that I admire most in the field of higher education. West unapologetically laid his accomplishments, failures, joy, and pain out for the world to see in black and white. After reading about West's journey from a hot tempered youth to becoming one of the leading educators, writers, and lecturers in the American academy I was left feeling inspired and encouraged to follow my own "calling." The book was very motivational and I recommend it to anyone who is looking to read a story about what "could be" if you work hard enough for it .

A Good Read
While I am a dear fan of Brother West and liked his book a great deal, I was slightly disturbed by his inability to maintain healthy relationships with the women and children in his life. His talk about love should first begin in the home. Too many African American men, for their own selfish reasons, have walked away from the women and children in thier lives and I can't get past this. We have to take care of home before we take care of the larger community. I still deeply admire this brother, but this was a sore point of the book for me.

This book was extremely enlightening. I could not put it down. Cornel West is brilliant! This book was well written and well worth the money. I learned so much about great writers and higher education. Also, anything is possible in life! Good job Cornel!

He doesn't let his faith cloud his reason and he lives his life for the betterment of humanity. He understands that the bible is a good start; but that there are other books & enlightened people in the world. He is a shining example of 'the golden rule' aka treat others as you wish to be treated.
It was interesting to read about how Brother West was raised in Sacramento during the early 60's when racism was still fairly common. Then how during the following years how he came to fill his life with knowledge and cultured people to become the amazing man he has become. -
