Accessible, interesting, and comprehensive
This book has everything for the new or practicing Buddhist - a concise introduction to what Buddhism is that clarifies without being simplistic, every possible temple or practice center in New York City plus New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York State (who knew there were so many monasteries and retreats up there, or a zendo run by a Catholic priest in Jersey City?), and even resources such as vegan restaurants, stores where you can buy bells or meditation mats, and information on events in the city and useful publications. All are objectively reviewed - while Wilson certainly gives an indication of where he thinks newcomers will be most comfortable and lists positive and negative details (sometimes very minor, such as the temperature of the temple or the decor) he urges readers to value their own judgment and to neither rule out nor blindly embrace a center or practice because of what they have read or heard about it. Even for those who are settled in one place or will never end up meditating with others, it's a fascinating read.
