    meh

the beginning was pretty interesting, i must admit. but things just went downhill from there.when the main character, patton, arrives at her aunt's house, things got very predictable. the boy she falls for is perfect, their relationship is perfect, blah blah blah. that was the worst thing about the book, that their relationship had no flaws whatsoever-they were a perfect, lovely little match, despite all the main characters going ons about how un-worthy she is-monotonous to say the least, idiotic ramblings to be blunt. and then the ending! just came flying out of nowhere. i grew to dislike patton greatly, just as i grew to dislike this book.

THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!

This is literally the absolute BEST book I've ever read. It is so emotional and depressing but I couldn't put the book down! I finished the book in less than a day and I loved the book.

    Disgusted!!

This book was horrible. It took me months to read it because I dreaded picking it up. It was slow. The information included some inaccurate ideas such as Mormons and abuse goes hand in hand. The people who are reviewing this book must be rating this book highly because this is an Ellen Hopkins book. I have read Impulse, Crank, and Glass and they were the best books I have ever read. If the readers read this book without knowing it was by Ellen, I think the overall rating would not be 4.5 but something more like 2.

    A reviewer

This book by Ms. Hopkins was very poorly researched, if researched at all. She has portrayed members of the LDS church as terrible and non-christian like. The Mormon church is nothing like what is described in this awful book. Often, people get confused with the LDS church and the FLDS church. The FLDS church is the one you hear about in the news every now and then in the Nevada and southern Utah desert. They have been reported to do these kinds of things described in this book, but not the LDS church. FLDS is a broken off sect of the original LDS church. It's not uncommon for the general public to mistake these two churches. This book was personally infuriating for me to read. The only reason I continued reading was to see what other false things are being published nationally about the LDS church. Maybe the author should have researched the LDS church even a little before she began to write it. I cannot recommend this book to ANYONE! I hope you find this helpful.

    Burned

I ordered this book specifically because I'm a HUGE fan of Ellen Hopkins and her books Crank and Glass. First things first, this book in no way compares to either. Despite it's length it lacked depth, detail, emotion, and quite frankly I lost interest early on. While this should be a very relatable book, [sex, struggle with religion, abusive home, being an outcast, ect.], it was all but in my opinion. I couldn't feel what the character felt. It's a beautiful plot but so poorly written. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to say I read it- but I do feel I wasted my money and most of my friends agree that this is our least favourite of all of her books. [i'm the only one out of us who hasn't read impulse, but they all assure me it's amazing.] All I can say is I would recommend borrowing it from a friend/library before buying it.

    Burned by Burned

I was very disappointed with this book. It was the first I've read by Ms. Hopkins, and will be the last I read by her. It was very bigoted and poorly researched in regards to the LDS faith, and I believe that she did her well-drawn-out characters and her audience a serious disservice. There was not one positively drawn LDS character in the book, nothing to show that there might even be anything positive about the LDS faith. I realize that wasn't Ms. Hopkins' intention, so perhaps she felt it unnecessary to do so. I believe, though, that whenever someone is writing a book where the protagonist is a member of a particular faith, the writer is under an implicit obligation to do present the religion in an accurate light. This is not the case with this book. I also find Ms. Hopkins' 'poetry' format very disappointing. Merely chopping up text bytes and adding interesting tabs does not make poetry. On the positive side, I felt that the main characters were very well drawn out. They were compelling and interesting. I wish that the story had done justice to the marvelous characters.

    Very Untrue

This book would have been really good if only the LDS religion hadnt been portrayed in such a horrible and untrue light. The religion wasnt very well researched by Ellen Hopkins. All the book did for me was make me angry that now many teenagers would have a biased opinion of any mormon that they meet because of how mormons are portrayed in this book. Its just wrong.

I can't recommend this to anyone

Ms. Hopkins has created a work of fiction that is full of blatant bigotry toward the LDS religion. All of her Mormon characters were either abusive or passive, nothing in between. She has villainized the entire religion by implying that this is what Mormons are like. She perverts LDS doctrine to suit her plot and at the end of the novel she seems to justify gun violence toward Church members. Too bad most YA readers will never know that in reality 'Burned' is poorly researched and edited. I am shocked that McElderry would promote of such a work.

    Well, I'm crying now...

and that meets one of my requirements for a good book. This one was as excellent as Crank. I really felt for Pattyn and her multiple predicaments. Having know abuse myself and seen it happen to others, I consider it a very accurate portrayl of alcoholism. The book was not very kind to the LDS church, but I believe it was used because it has been caught in its hypocrisy more than once and Hopkins used that as one of the main drives of Pattyn's motivations in the book. Killer ending though. I wouldn't have bought the book if I was looking for happily ever after, not after reading Crank. Highly recommended.

I loved it, but it's not for everyone.

"Burned", by Ellen Hopkins, is a book that caught my attention while I was scanning around aimlessly in a large bookstore -- "Paradise Lost" cradled neatly in my hands. I caught a glimpse, then retreated. Caught another glimpse, and retreated again. Finally, I gave in. I'm glad I did.

Ellen Hopkins wrote a book of a young girl's journey into a dark, menacing hole and liberation out of it. The protagonist relates years of oppression and toil, longing for an escape. She acts out. She gets sent away -- apparently -- to heaven.

She meets the perfect guy. She lives in the perfect place. For a while, everything is perfect. However, happiness seldom lasts forever. The rug gets ripped out from beneath her, and that's the end.

Mind you, this is just a skeletal summary of a much more engrossing book. I've seen reviewers mock the writer relating everything as "perfect". They don't like how the situation goes from one extreme to another, and so quickly! However, you must remember that this is from Patton's point-of-view. From the point of view of a character, a young teenage girl, who has never experienced such emotions in her life. I concluded that these extremes were only Hopkins' way of mimicking a blossoming girl's mind-set. One deeply in love, blinded by it. Impassioned by it. One extreme to another.

That was just MY rationalization of the writing style. I'm sure that this will not be everyone's cup of tea. Regardless, I'm sure many will still find "Burned" to be a fantastic read. It's written creatively, it's short and sweet, and you'll be immersed. In fact, I finished it in two days. Give it a try. Buy it, or at least borrow it from your local library. It's worth a shot.

P.S. Excuse any grammatical errors. :)

    Growing up Mormon....enough said

As a young woman who grew up in a Mormon household and feeling like a complete outcast, due to the lack of communication in the home, I found this book EXTREMELY relatable! All one needs is a chance to be one's self and find their own identify. I believe the Mormon faith relies on one doing what they are told and not learning to do as they 'believe to be right' - I cannot speak for other religions, as I only know of the Mormon faith, however I believe there are a lot of things that get 'brushed under the rug' so to speak in many religions, not only Mormon. Very good read...especially for anyone who has felt like an outcast at anytime in their life!! OUTSTANDING!!!

Wow were to begin. Well first, Claps for Ellen Hopkins I am 16 years old and usely dont read all the books that an author writes. I can say I have read all of her books and would read them over and over again. But Burned wow this book was amazingly emotional and just well written. Now I wouldnt recommend any of Ellen Hopkins books for teens under the age of 14. But I would recommend this book highly for teens to read and not this just this but all of them. Didn't like the ending

I started reading the book and I honestly liked it, but at the end it just got bad. I hated the ending. I know that not every book is supposed to have a happy ending but this was just so cruel.

Hopkins knows how to pull on heartstrings.

I normally do not choose to read stories like this, but since I have joined the Speech & Debate team at my school and became a regular competitor in Dramatic Interpretation, Ellen Hopkins was right up my alley. The story line is a wonderful roller coaster with a new twist due to Hopkins choice stlye of writing. The visually appealing design of her text will keep you intrigued while the story itself will have you flipping pages faster than you believed possible.
In D.I., I performed the last 20 or so pages as my piece and I placed every time I competed. I even made it to semi-finals in Districts and States. For those of you who do not know about D.I., all of the pieces that are performed include some form of abuse, mental insanity, death, or tragedy. This book is not for the faint of heart.

    Mormons heading down hill...

All and all Burned was a really good book, from falling in love as a teen to the dangers of being a teen to what you never thought was coming. Pattyn and Ethan a typical couple of our era show us what really is going on in the relationship of a teen. Burned by Ellen Hopkins is a great book if you like to cry or even get a little taste of love.
