A wonderfully detailed book about the butler who served for decades in the White House. At times it seems like a promotion for the movie, but the writing is solid and the story is strong.

Very little story about Mr. Allen. The photographs were nice, but I thought I bought a book. Please don't buy this book you will be greatly disappointed. I think we could get a better story about Mr. Allen on Google and reading the net.

    Highly disappointing!

I was led to think that this would be an interesting perspective over a broad range of time; a look behind the scenes that would cause one to more appreciate the inner workings of government.
What I found, to my disgust, was a piece of liberal propaganda, through and through.
One third of the way through my read i wanted to throw it against the wall (which is my penchant with books/mags that irritate); however, since it is on my new Nook HD+, I resisted the urge.
For what it's worth, if you're looking for a balanced view, this is not for you (or me).
    Eyes wide open...

History forgotten, except for those who lived it.

This book, although slim in volume speaks volumes. It touches us all in different ways. It is a profoundly moving account of where this nation was and where we are now. Much has changed, much has not. There is still a lot of work to do. Are we, as a nation, ready to do the hard work of moving this country forward? Ever the optimist, I say a resounding YES!!

Mr. Haygood had written a sweeping capsule of a period in American history through the eyes of this man, a White House butler.
I was thoroughly engaged from beginning to end. Having also seen the movie, each media complemented the other.
Absorbing and powerful, thank you Mr. Haywood.
