Goldrush through the Eyes of a Boy...and Butler

This was required summer reading for my son entering 4th grade. Wonderful historical fiction with endearing characters that teaches kids about sea travel in the mid-1800s and a taste of what San Francisco and the gold camps of the 1849-50s might have been like--without them even knowing that they're learning something.

The story of the boy Jack and his Butler named Praiseworthy takes them from Boston on a ship to San Francisco and the gold fields of northern California. Praiseworthy is like a male Mary Poppins who always manages to find just the right solution to situations. His "magic," however, is his careful observation of people, kind heart, and keen understanding of human nature.

My son liked the story so well, he asked if there was a series of books about Jack and Praiseworthy.

    A Good Book

The story made me want to continue reading it. I like the way they described all of the characters. I would have given it a higher rating if the story was more realistic. Goes along well if you are learning about the gold rush.

    A Delightful Children's Book

This makes a great read. Especially for children but also for adults. It is a heartwarming adventure of companionship and action. The story spans from Boston's cold harbors to Brazil's lush coastlands to Southern California's hot deserts. And best of all are Fleishman's characters, Praiseworthy and Jack, make great pals. For a childrens novel this book is packed with action and suspense.
