The opening was really great and set a pace that the rest of the book could not keep up with. After 400 pages we only learn three new things of the protomoceule. The rest is filled with multiple points of view dialog . Lots and lots of character building dialog. The authors squandered two scenes and completely rushed it; the last one-on-one battle and Holden's nightmare part duex. The former was built from the first battle that you know was comming and then fell terrible flat. The later was so rushed, its a huge let down. There is redemtion at the end and I am not refering to the last scene. But rather the bonus snippet leading to the third book. So happy reading that scene.

In the end you get a glimpse of potential of what is to come. However prepare for the authors to force you through character building instead of allowing a greater story to fill in the blanks for the reader.

I now have high, if not impossible expectations for the third book in the series. For a series called "The Expanse", I find it small in scope. The first book opened the doors. But this made it all feel small, except the bonus look forward.
