I love historical fiction, and this book is one of the best. This is the second Lynn Austin book Ive read. I wasnt disapointed. Not only did I get a difrent prespective of a war Ive studied some, but I also got a Biblical prespective on the war and in life. It really made me think. The Biblical comparitives were new to me. Give this book a try, but I will warn you, you might have trouble putting it down.

Lynn Austin is a talented writer bringing her characters to life and telling a compelling story one is hard pressed to put down. However, I could use a little less of the repetitive religious dogma. But I am actually surprised at the content considering it is Bethany Publishers. I would have thought her work wouldn't be approved by this ultra conservative religious publishing house.

    Eh

I wish they would label Christian fiction as such. I am NOT Christian, and I would like to avoid this claptrap in the future. Being preached to is not my idea of a fun read, no matter what the body of the story may entail. The historical aspect was good and well-written, but the tone was too preachy.

Good book but expect a lot of bible quotes!

I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if it had not been so preachy. I did not realize that every chapter had scripture after scripture quoted. I was looking for more of a historical book and not one that spent so much time on the morality of why slavery was so wrong. I guess I thought that it was common knowledge and a given that slavery was an atrocity against man. I can honestly say that given the amount of quotes and preachy that it is doubtful I will try another one of her books, although if you can cut through the preaching the book would have been very good.

Highly Recommended - moves right along!

I loved the historical background of this book and have grown attached to the characters. It always kept my interest; in fact, I could hardly put it down. I'm looking forward to reading book 2 in the series.
