I love historical fiction, and this book is one of the best. This is the second Lynn Austin book Ive read. I wasnt disapointed. Not only did I get a difrent prespective of a war Ive studied some, but I also got a Biblical prespective on the war and in life. It really made me think. The Biblical comparitives were new to me. Give this book a try, but I will warn you, you might have trouble putting it down.

But I am actually surprised at the content considering it is Bethany Publishers. I would have thought her work wouldn't be approved by this ultra conservative religious publishing house.

    Needs some editing.

Good plot but about one hundred pages too long due to unnecessary facts about battles and the author's habit of repitition.

    Hopeful for more

The book was an okay read. Written very well but it wasn't all I had hoped it would be. I was hoping for lots of details about life as a slave and hardships endured through the war. This story teased with those things, but left me wanting more of that. I know this was a Christian based book but I became bored because it was to much, it almost felt like it was being pushed on me. If it had teased us more with the Christian things, it would have made me more curious to learn more, maybe even dig out my Bible to look it up.

    #$%&

I believe what she did for the slaves was wonderful, but for all the men that she caused to get killed, she should have been taken to trial and faced their families and been punished for murder.

    I Also Recommend:

    good read

in movie terms it would be the kind you can only watch once. I admit from the beginning I knew what the big secret was going to be but the Heroine is interesting enough to keep you reading. I did feel overwelmed by the use of "Massa Jesus" and it seemed to drag on in places that weren't neccesary of interesting. With that said it is a good book to teach people about for for neighbor and family no matter what.
