This was one of the best books I ever read. I love that not only is the book presented in the original middle English, but also in translated modern English that I can understand. I was really blown away by the text and how expressive and beautiful it was. It is quite an undertaking, but it will pay off.

e-book review only; caution for ease of use

Hanning's edition is marvelous in standard paper formatting. My review is for the electronic edition formatted for the Nook, however, which is extraordinarily poorly done--hence the detracted stars. 5 stars for content; 1 star for formatting.

Hanning's edition is marvelous in standard paper formatting. My review is for the electronic edition formatted for the Nook, however, which is extraordinarily poorly done--hence the detracted stars. 5 stars for content; 1 star for formatting.

The electronic version has no line numbers, which is a problem. The translation is advertised as "facing page," but in fact it's just haphazardly lumped into the original Middle English with no warning and no formatting changes whatsoever. You'll be reading along in Middle English and suddenly find yourself reading the same thing all over again in Modern English, and there's nothing you can do about it. So basically only someone really familiar with the Canterbury Tales will be able to use this electronic format, and anyone else should stay away.

It's a shame, because I'd really like to have access to this one on my Nook.

    Medieval Barroom Tales

This bawdry collection of barroom tales is only made worse by the distracting rhymes. I am very disappointed in the literary quality of this work. The readers do an excellent job with the material, but this collection is going in the garbage anyway.

    Tales for adults, but...

These are great stories for adults of any age and all can, in some way, relate to them. Even if they are told to children, somewhat screened if you have an unedited copy as I do, they will bring interest as well as laughter and amazement to them. These are stories told to real people by real people in real terms in a reality that once was, but it applies to real people of today and of the reality of today.

    Great Edition!

My Freshman year in high school, my English teacher read us a few lines in ME, and I thought it was the most amazing thing I'd ever heard. I'd always wanted to read the real thing myself, and (many!) years later I found this at my local B&N. The ME isn't that difficult once you get used to it, and this edition is very well glossed. I have also since picked up the Riverside Chaucer as this edition's only fault is not including all the tales, but this is the one I prefer.

    chaucer the great

I read the WW Skeat Edition 3 times in its entirety (unabridged). It's a masterpiece that relates human nature in everyday people. It is amazing that Chaucer managed to capture each human being of his society. And what more to display the human stage of 'Life' than with a journey! The book is relevant back in the 1400s as it is in the 21st century. A timeless jewel for the human race in 2005 as it will be in the next 500 years (i.e. the year 2505), even in its Middle English as Chaucer completed it back in 1386! Timeless timeless timeless!

Barnes & Noble's description of this book is inaccurate

My low rating is not for The Canterbury Tales, but a review of the above description (contains a graceful modern translation on facing pages). This book actually has no translation. It is all Middle English and didn't work for my purposes.
