I love a book that gives you a stomach ache when its getting tense.
I love a book that has me thinking about the characters and their hopeless plights while Im shopping for carrots and yogurt.
I love a book that makes me scream at my nook because she is an idiot and doesn't love him like I would.
I love a book that makes me hesitate to pick it up again after a few hours break because Im not sure Im ready for the emotional roller coaster to begin again.

If your looking for romantic eroticism, the kind that makes you want to wake up your boyfriend in the middle of the night with amorous intentions, this is NOT the book. In fact, you hardly notice the sex happening with all the deep psychological manipulations taking place.(including your own mind!)

This is an amazing author. I want to hug her.

I read Captive in the Dark in one sitting, staying up until after 2 am to finish it. I DID NOT enjoy the experience. I bought the book in spite of the reviews, almost certainly out of morbid curiousity. The recent influx of BDSM-themed romance novels patterened after Fifty Shades in fascinating. Apparently there are so many single, handsome, well-built BDSM billionaires about these days that every secretary, personal assistant or intern can have one for her very own. But this book is no romance, although B&N has chosen to place it in the Romance category.

The principle male character, Caleb, is no romantic figure. He is tortured and damaged. Kidnapped when he was very young and raised in the Middle East, he has endured a childhood of sexual abuse, violence and pain that is devoid of love or morality. He has suppressed all memories of a happy home and a loving mother. He is a survivor. The only human being he feels a connection to is Rafiq, the man who saved him and taught him to kill and train sex slaves. The main focus in Rafiq's life is to exact revenge on the Russian billionaire who destroyed his family. And since Caleb feels he ows everything to Rafiq, who he views as his savior, Caleb is determined to help Rafiq achieve this goal. Thus driven, Caleb travels to California to search out a female he will kidnap and train as a sex slave. Once the female is ready, she will be sold to the Russian as a decoy, to distract him while Rafiq destroys everything he holds dear and then murders him.

Livvie is the female Caleb targets for kidnapping. The victim of an abusive childhood herself, Livvie is eighteen; she is bright, ambitious, and determined to rise above her past and live a meaningful and productive life. Of course, her life changes abruptly and irrevocably when she meets Caleb. But she is also a survivor.

Captive in the Dark is well written and evocative. I admired Livvie; she is spunky and brave and eventually rises above Caleb's attempts to break her. I want her to escape and get home to the mother she loves in spite of her abuse. I DO NOT admire Caleb, but recognize that he can't help what he has become. The story introduces the reader to a world that is largely only whispered about, a world where life is cheap and people are commodities to be bought, sold and used as those in power see fit. This is not a world I would willingly visit again.

    A HIGHLY EMOTIONAL READ!

If you want to read a book that takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride; simultaneously shocks and awes you, then this is it. In ¿Captive in the Dark¿, author CJ Roberts gives us a good look at the world of pleasure slaves and their trainers. A world devoid of love or mercy; a world of traitors and revenge where only the fearless and powerful has a chance of surviving. All Livvie ever wanted was for her mother to love her, for her dreams of the handsome angel who rescued her from an evil pursuer on the street to come true; and ultimately for a pair of loving arms to hold her. She is a victim, but a victim who will fight back long after the reader thinks she is broken and crushed into absolute submission. I found Livvie¿s character to be a breath of fresh air. So often female characters are portrayed as needy, clingy and weak, but she was exactly the opposite. Despite the horrendous physical and emotional torture she suffered, she remained strong, courageous and displayed a maturity beyond her years. Caleb on the other hand does not know or understand what love is. A victim of circumstance himself, he chose power, revenge and an impossible debt to a friend, to be his final escape from victimhood. But, can he ever completely escape being a victim? Could love, the one thing he does not know or understand, make him a victim again? Having said this, I think CJ Roberts created the most realistic characters I have ever come across in a book. She allows her characters to grow along with the story; developing as well as revealing depths to their personalities, hidden beneath layers of hurt and disillusionment. As the story alternates between the third person point of view of Caleb, and Livvie's first person point of view, the reader gets a very close look at the true thoughts and feelings of both. This highly effective style of writing serves to bring the reader deeper into the story, making it a truly unforgettable, emotional experience. The story is written with an intensity which will leave you numb; dreading and cursing the cruelty of the slave trainer and crying your heart out with, and for Livvie¿.. and yes ¿ sometimes even for Caleb. Extreme betrayal plays a key role in this book. Livvie's love for her mother betrayed; and Caleb - all too aware of the ever present possibility of betrayal by his friend Rafiq, his thug helpers and even Livvie. I truly admire the author for maintaining such a high level of emotional intensity and stomach churning tension throughout the book. Her insight into human weaknesses and raw emotions is astonishing! Yet, in spite of all this horror and cruelty, there are some heartrendingly beautiful and touching moments in the story. (As this book deals with the subject of pleasure slaves and kidnapping in a very real way, there are scenes and subject matter which might offend sensitive readers and thus is not suitable for readers below the age of eighteen. It contains scenes of severe cruelty, deviant sexual practices and violence which, although realistic, may offend sensitive readers.) (Ellen Fritz)

Holy crap, this story rocked me and made me question everything!! I can't honestly say how I feel about the relationship between Caleb and Livvie, but I do know that I feel for him (a lot) and believe he deserves more, just as Livvie does. I am so tormented over what is right and what is wrong, but I think this story is meant to make you question what you believe. I am so anxious for Seduced...I can hardly stand it!

I thought the author did a great jobs, I mean really great. This book is so dark and twisted, I love it. I can't wait to find out more! It took me approximately 3 paragraphs to be hooked in and read the whole thing in less than 6 hours.

    A great captive/non-consent story

This is a nonconsent story that does a great job of sympathetizing the hero...almost to the point of making the heroine seem unreasonable. But really, she's not, she's coping with a horrible situation with a strength of character that is admirable. The story was less erotic than I expected, more psychological.

    My 1st book review.

I've had my Nook since October 2012. ( 5 months) I have over 150 books in my library & this is the 1st time I have felt compelled to write a review. I just finished the 2nd book & WOW!

I had read the overview for these 2 books a couple months ago & couldnt bring myself to purchase. I finally bought them 2 weeks ago but still couldnt bring myself to read them right away. Usually I'm so excited I cant wait to get started.

I started this book 4 days ago & I couldnt put it down. I would put it down to give my mind a break but start reading again a few minutes later. I just finished the 2nd book! Now I wish I would have read them months ago!

I cannot explain the different emotions I went through reading this story! I cannot even put into words how GREAT this author is! The story....the characters....the ending....the way its written....I dont even know where to begin!

WOW....WOW.....WOW! This story will stay with me for a long time! This author is a new fav of mine! I will be waiting & 1st in line for any other books she writes. This story will definitely be in my top 1% of favorite books! It was exceptionally written & keeps you there till the end. I'm afraid it may have ruined me for all other authors. I dont even want to start another book at this time because I need to let my mind take a break! Lol. This story is not for the squeamish but it is very powerful & a must read!

This is one of my top 3 favorite books of all time. I have read Captive in the Dark and Seduced in the Dark 3 times. And I was just as captivated each time. Yes, it is dark. Yes, it is intense. Yes, it is hard to read at times. But it is more than worth it. This is not an easy love story. I hated Caleb just as much as I loved him. But oh boy did I end up loving him. BUY THIS BOOK!!! You will not be disappointed!!!

Kudos to the author for creating a complex and compelling character in Caleb. His backstory helped make him intriguing and in general he was just very well written. The interactions between him and Livvie were also well done, and often as twisted as advertised - but also sometimes developed a little too slowly and even got a little repetitive. I've heard the 2nd book is a lot better and I almost wonder if this book couldn't have been edited down and been the first 1/3 of the second novel instead of its own story. As some other reviewers have noted, the chapters from Livvie's perspective were quite repetitive and definitely would have benefited from some tightening.

I think im the only one who didn't enjoy this book. I've have read some pretty dark books before but this was just plan disturbing. The one thing i'll give this book is its Believable but thats about it. i don't like Caleb, I can't understand him. I'm all for revenge but this is too twisted. I don't see how some girls actually enjoyed his character and calling him a dark hero. The whole book i wanted to tie him to my car (alive) and drive from Boston to LA without stopping. Bottom line i don't think this is an erotica its more of a sad, dark, crime novel.

This book is for some people but i'm not one of them

    Pretty good but...

The writing is tons better then 50 shades of birdcage liner, but at this point I guess I'm a little burnt out of every book having to have Dom/sub or in this case master/slave relationships. Definitely worth reading though
