    Addy's Future.

The Addy series of American Girl by Connie Porter is informative. In book number six: Changes for Addy readers learn the outcome of the previous books. Here are a few quotes and facts from the book that you may find interesting: Page 44 "There's a time for each of us to die," said Auntie Lula. ".Addy, we don't all make it where we want to go in life. We start our journeys and have our dreams and hopes, and sometimes other people have to carry on with them when we can't." Page 48 "This shell was to remind you that we are linked to the people in our past forever. They live in our hearts. Their lives, and their strength and courage, are part of us even though they gone." 1865 - Civil War ends after 4 years. Years after the Civil War are reconstruction period. 14th Amendment = citizenship for black Americans. 15th Amendment = all male citizens have right to vote. 1920 = women allowed/have the right to vote. Congress created the Freedman's Bureau to assist former slaves to adjust to their lives as free people. The Freedman's Bureau set-up educational institutions including Howard University and Fisk University. Ida B Wells = Mississippi schoolteacher/writer of newspaper articles about violence against blacks from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. 1893 = 1st heart operation in the world performed by Daniel Hale Williams. 1909 = NAACP created, and one of the founders is W.E.B. Du Bois. Connie Porter has developed a wonderful and interesting storyline for Addy and her family with their journey coming out of slavery.
