Genie's Lead Animator Has Lots Of Great Info

Eric Goldberg is a fantastic animator and was the lead on Genie in Aladdin (as well as other works, including Princess and the Frog). His book lets an animator, beginner or seasoned pro, in on some great info from the simple to the minutes details needed to bring animation to the next level.

I'm currently learning 3D animation and, even though this book references mostly 2D, the principles all relate to any medium. Eric does a great job explaining in short, sweet sentences that are very informative, but he also shows you the do's and don't's. I like that he shows you what happens in the typical mistakes and why it's wrong as well as here's why other pieces are right.

The best part of this book, and the thing that takes it an unbelievable value, is the DVD. He has a nice amount of examples right from the book, completely animated, that you can go through frame by frame to see the spacing and timing of each drawing. This puts other books to shame since all you usually see are a series of drawings next to each other, not the finished piece moving in front of your eyes. Excellent and invaluable addition to a great book.

Side note - I had the unbelievable opportunity to listen to Eric Goldberg talk at the school that I attend. He is a great person, very funny (voices, jokes and stories of the "old days") but he's also so intelligent about animation as an art. He's more than willing to share anything he knows with anyone who is willing to listen, thinking more of what is best for the art rather than himself. One of those rare opportunities you will always be glad you were able to experience.
