Recommended: Like Edvard Munch painting Stalin's Russia
After the first 50 pages I thought this was the bleakness of Dickens and the psychosis of Dostoyevsky's Raskolnikov. The protagonist is a profoundly flawed character seeking redemption and it is indeed a tortured path. But it is worth the struggle to wade along with him. It is a stark portrait of the paranoia of Stalin's Russia wrapped in a very engaging saga.

Highly recommended
The first chapter is gut wrenching and sad. But keep reading, the story of Leo will draw you in until you can't put it down. You will thank God that you were not born in the Stalinist Soviet Union.
