I’ve pollen in love with Little Bee
Don’t let the cutesy title fool you, Little Bee is powerful and nuanced. Chris Cleave’s novel captures the plight of immigrants to an uncaring developed world. Descriptions capture the bewilderment of a girl, born into a tiny African village, who has just been thrust into London alone. Sarah is a driven and wealthy woman with a seemingly perfect life. The two women take part in a unique journey to recover from personal tragedy.

The story begins with the titular character completing the journey of a lifetime. Prior to the novel, she had stowed away on a freighter to England, but was discovered and interned in an immigration detention center. She carefully cultivated her English skills while hiding her femininity to save herself from the rampant exploitation. One day, through no fault of her own, Little Bee becomes an illegal immigrant. She goes to an affluent English widow, Sarah, whose connection to her is only hinted at until much later in the novel. Sarah’s husband had committed suicide a few days prior due to guilt also seeded during that pivotal scene, described much later.

Despite a slightly implausible beginning, Cleave’s skillful writing makes the reader accept every event hook, line, and sinker. His staunch refusal to sugarcoat the occasional moments of brutality calls to mind “The Kite Runner”. Little Bee’s formal voice and her conflict with the overly civilized world she reaches will no doubt remind the reader of Octavian Nothing. However, the book notably lacks the tiresome heavy-handedness endemic to novels containing such a modern and relevant political message. Instead, it is easy to lose oneself in the sheer humanity of the characters. Although initially Sarah seems shallow and useless, her true depth is shown when the nature of her and Little Bee’s relationship is revealed. Despite the depression and cynicism Little Bee has developed through her traumatic past, the book has many light moments, and never falls into despondency despite the sometimes grim subject matter.
