Not as Good as The 70's and 80's Books
This book follows Christgau's Guides of the 70's and 80's with disappointing results. Although the jacket says that 3800 albums are reviewed, most are tossed off with a line or two; some not reviewed at all (rated a N for neither) and some given a bomb symbol rated for a, you guessed it, a bomb. Whereas his 2 previous guides were a simple A-Z artist ranking (accompanied by a letter grade of A-F) with additional appendixes at the end of the book this guide's reviews are followed by a bunch of symbols that take too long to figure out and are confusing. Even his monthly Village Voice columns are simpler. Also missing from this volume are a Rock Library of Essential recordings. Yes, there are some good moments here. You'll find yourself agreeing and disagreeing with Christgau's opinions quite often (e.g. he's wrong about the Mavericks). While I applaud Christgau's thoroughness and love of all things Rock and Roll this will be a letdown for those who've waited for another Christgau Guide Book. I'll give it a B.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
