An excellent mix of Pynchon and Hunter S. Thompsonstyle writing style with a great story line.

I put off purchasing this book because I thought it might be a mediocre PI novel. I also don't really care for New Orleans. I was pleasantly surprised. I could not put this down. The main character is very authenttic and downright lovable. The story is witty and never takes itself too seriously. This is the best novel I have read in over a year. I highly recommend it. Awesome read!

Well, thanks to the long winded posters hellbent on spoiling books for others here is yet another book i cant get because u ruined it by revealing every detail of the book. Get a grip and stop ruining it for others. We have the synopsis which tells just enough to peek your interest. We do not need u telling every detail, thereby ruining the book. U have been reported to bn and i hope everyone else who is as sick of u ppl that persist in revealing every plot point will report u too. U must be stopped. Start a blig if u want to dissect every sentence but stop doing it here.

    A new heroine

A different kind of detective novel. Read with an open mind. I look forward to uncovering more of Dewitt's mysteries.

    Great Start to a Series

I really enjoyed this book and found the character very entertaining and interesting. I cannot wait for the next in the series.

    A Real Experience

All the way through this book, I wasn't sure whether I loved or hated it, but at the end, I was blown away by it. Claire DeWitt is not someone I would ordinarily choose to spend time with, but she is a fascinating character. Gran, clearly, is brilliant.

Enjoyable read with great character development

I bought this because it was only $2.99 & my expectations weren't particularly high. I was pleasantly surprised & thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes the main character is an empath but this doesn't come off like a gimmick along the lines of the many blood sucking cheerleaders or mystic flute teachers we're inundated with nowadays. It's just another facet of a very well developed main character whose flaws make her believable. I haven't lived in New Orleans in many years but Ms Gran also captured some of the vital essence of the city & some of its denizens without romanticizing either. I look forward to more of the series.

    It was a fair read

I enjoy mysteries, but not this type. For me the characters were boring. I did finish the book, but it was tough as it didn't really grab my interest. It seams as if the character Claire was trying to be a hard boiled detective in the vein of Philip Marlow.

I would not recommend it to a friend.

    Loved this book.

I wasn't sure about buying this book, sometimes you get lucky and find a great story. I really liked the main character in this story and hope the author will write a series with her. I would for sure buy them. I normally don't care for stories set in New Orleans, but this was very interesting and eye opening. Great reading for sure!

Absolutely unique mystery, brings New Orleans to life

Claire DeWitt isn't your ordinary detective, and maybe she isn't a detective at all. But, she is certainly a great, superbly developed character, in a story that really grabs you. Ms Gran's writing style takes a lot of getting used to, but it is well worth the effort, and the reward is great.
