An Indispensable Introduction for the Classical Music Newbie
This book is an essential addition to the library of the novice music aficionado. John Burrows offers an engaging overview of the elements of music construction, and the instrumental composition of a standard orchestra, prior to launching into a comprehensive discussion of the four musical eras. His discussion of the individual artists of each era is somewhat superficial, but this is to be expected given the expansive scope that is undertaken. Thus, the source of the sole weakness of this book also proves to be its greatest strength. This book's true value is in informing the budding appreciator of classical music of its vast range, and to provide a small taste of the lives of the composers, their motivations, and inspirations.
