excellent historical fiction for beginning readers

This is "An I Can Read Book" for level 3. The historical fiction "I Can Read Books" for young readers are really quite interesting. I have read Clara and the Book Wagon and Snowshoe Thompson, both by Nancy Smiler Levenson; The Drinking Gourd by F. N. Mongo; Dolphin by Robert Morris; and The Long Way Westward by Joan Sandin. Others that come highly recommended are the three "Golly Sisters" books by Betsy Byars, The Josefina Story Quilt by Eleanor Coerr, and The Long Way to a New Land ("prequel" to The Long Way Westward) by Joan Sandin.
Clipper Ship is about the fictional Capt. Murdock, who takes his wife and children with him on his ship, the Rainbird, for a trip from New York, around Cape Horn, to California in 1850. The story is based on true-life tales of clipper ship voyages following the discovery of gold in which women went to sea with their husbands and families. In Clipper Ship there are one reference to drinking rum and one incident where all the men take their shirts off. However, Mrs. Murdock "homeschools" their children on the voyage, and Capt. Murdock prays to God for their safety among icebergs.
