A book and author to remember.

I found this book to be extravagant, charming, and emotional. The characterization is excellent. The story flowing. And the fight scenes, whether there sword fights or gun slinging, are riveting. I especially love the clash of cultures. If you love Japanese history and culture, or a western with a flare, you¿ll love this book. I hope to read more from Takashi Matsuoka soon.

    A History Teacher ...A martial-arts, action-packed story line reader...I LOVED THIS BOOK!

'Cloud of Sparrows' is one of the most entertaining and cleverly written historical novels I have read in quite awhile. I agree with many others that the historicial references made in the book are a bit 'inaccurate', however most of the plot conforms to the standard research available and the entertainment value makes up for these minor flaws. Matsuoka is not a history professor, his works are not primary source material so in my mind, poetic license is acceptable! Perhaps 'Autumn Bridge' will explain and properly develop the story of the Okumuchi clan a little more! If you like historical fiction...you'll enjoy this novel!

    Cloud of Sparrows

This novel came close with James Clavelle's novel Shogun, which I preferred, it is in a later time period and acurately shows certain clashes between western and eastern thinking yet at the same showing the striking similarities. Stark a fast gun cowboy is shown a sword art in 5 minutes when it takes years to learn and wins because his western skill can be used in Japan within a different context.

    Well, I liked it

I liked this book. I hope he writes a sequel. I find it more entertaining than plodding through some of those huge tomes about Japan.
