Okay, first off, I want to get this out of the way: This book may be a bit intense for some readers. If you're all about 50 Shades of Grey, well, this is far beyond that! If you're looking for a deeper portrayal of M/s that goes beyond spankings and glaring, this is the book you want!
I don't often find erotica that I love enough to give the highest rating to, since I am pretty kinky myself. I want intense scenes, but I also want it to be believable. A lot of books seem geared to a more vanilla crowd, and leave me wanting. This book did not.
The setup here is that Molly has been loaned out for a week to Mephisto. It's unusual for a BDSM novel to have a heroine who already knows what she wants and needs. Other reviewers have seen Molly as stupid or mentally ill, but I see a character who is genuinely flawed, but by the time the novel takes place she has found ways to use her desire for submission to make herself stronger. When the narrative begins she has already been in an M/s relationship and has grown within it.
Mephisto is cruel, but in ways that are VERY hot to me. Again, people not into total power exchange might be put off by this, but I can see how the author has woven in the nuances of this type of relationship and has conjured up scenes that are full of the "Oh my god, I don't know if I can take this!" feeling, while still being consensual and safe. There is a lot of corporal punishment, and orgasm denial, and speech restriction. And then there are the subtle hints of what is to come in the rest of the trilogy . . .

I have read other novels by Annbel Joseph that I have enjoyed more than Club Mephisto. I felt as if whole sections that showed day to day events in Molly's relationship with her master were edited from the final copy. Additionally, throughout the book, Mephisto's character remained an enigma, especially when his character appeared to do an about face in his behavior and relationship with Molly.

I should have paid attention to the author's warning about some

I should have paid attention to the author's warning about some of the book being objectionable, or rather too intense is a better term. Although I enjoy the D/s dynamic, I'm not into the degree of S/M this book portrays. It made me cringe in parts, which in itself is probably a sign of a great story-teller in painting the picture of events. I did read the entire book, then got the second in the series, Molly's Lips which was not as graphic, even though it is the same story told by Mephisto. The third book is wonderful - do not miss it!
