Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child provide the best middle book of a trilogy in recent memory

In Cairn Barrow, Scotland Special Agent Pendergast and his brother-in-law Esterhazy go stag hunting. However, nether of them hunt deer, but each other. Pendergast seeks revenge against Esterhazy for murdering his wife Helen (see Fever Dream). As Pendergast traps his adversary he asks why he killed his sister just as a stag assaults the agent; giving Esterhazy the chance to shoot his adversary in the chest and explain he did not kill his sibling as Helen lives. Esterhazy leaves his friend to die as he calls the constabulary to report the accident. Inspector Balfour leads the search, but no human corpse is found.

Pendergast no longer seeks Cold Vengeance as now he searches for Helen, but is confused over her role in the duplicity of her death; unless his in-law lied. He returns to New York from the moors, but the clues take him to the bayous where increasingly he wonders whether Helen arranged her death and how little he really knew her as Pendergast begins to uncover secrets his wife hid from him.

The second Pendergast's Helen inquiry is a great thriller that is loaded with action from the first hunting confrontation to the climax that ends with a cliffhanger setup for the finish. The taut story line is fast-paced and filled with twists that hook the audience. However the hero makes the tale as he will remind readers of Liam Neeson in Taken with his determination to rescue Helen if she is alive. Suspenseful, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child provide the best middle book of a trilogy in recent memory.

Oh how sad. I so looked forward to this book, preordered it even - and it was such a huge disappointment to me. Seriously, seriously disappointed. I fell in love with Preston & Child because of the archeology and mystery that flows through their writing. This was a boring crime drama book that I cared nothing about. I could give a rat's ass about Helen, Pendergast's wife. I want the mystery, the strangeness, the fun of their other books. I can't remember the last time I was this disappointed in an author.

For a CRIME DRAMA, the book was good - had all the excitement, shoot outs, etc. Then, of course, they had an ending to lead into the next book - a book I'm doubting I will read because it will be more of this theme. Where are the men who wrote "Relic"? Sigh.

I know it is silly, but I almost feel betrayed.

I liked that this book gave us another look into the past life of Agent Pendergast. While it may not be the best book in the series, I still enjoyed the story. Looking forward to reading the next one!

    The games'afoot!!

Aha!!! Pendergast has met a mystery he cannot so easily unravel. Or perhaps it is his connection to the victims, his wife and himself. If you haven't read a Preston and Child novel WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Great writing, Great plot lines, Great mysteries. Aurthur Conan Doyle would be envious.

    Dovewing

Turns on wolfpaw. Snarls and leaps. Pins him down. Blinds him and rips his throat out, shaking him. Drops him and watches the light leaves his eyes.

    .:Whisper:.

Name: Whisper. That's it. Just Whisper.
Species: She is the Demon of Secrets.
Gender: Female, obviously.
Age: She is one of Satan's first successful Demons. So very, very old. Over thousands of millenias old.
Appearance: She is a tall, petite woman standing at 5'11". Her frame is very thin and frail-looking, yet she could snap a bone without a thought. Her complexion is pale. On anyone else, she would look very ill, but she simply looks more beautiful. It's a Demon's charm. She has straight white-blonde hair that falls beyond her hips. Yes, she can sit on it. Her cheekbones are high and sharp, making her cheeks cave in. Her chin is slightly rounded. She has a curved, normal-sized nose. Her lips are full, yet thin and a natural pink-color. Her eyelashes are full and long. On good days, her eyes are a gray color. On bad days, they are either silver or gold. Her irises are always swirling with the many secrets she holds inside. She speaks with a British accent.
If anyone were to tell or ask for a secret, her eyes become clear, and very dull. Her hair turns black and her lips become sewn shut. She looks ill, rather than beautiful and mysterious.
Powers: She holds everyone's secrets. If something is a secret, she'd know it. ((Not really, morons. T.T If you expect her to know it, please tell me in parenthesis.)) She is bound by her secrecy and cannot tell a soul. If there is mist, it most likely involves her. Mist is her weapon and her transportation. She has the strength ten times the strength of a Vampire. She can control electricity and is a very good fighter.
Wardrobe: It depends on her mood. She usually wears a long silver dress that hugs her body and a pair of silver wrap-around sandals. She will wear anything from any age.
Extra Info: If you touch her, you sign your death wish. She cannot be touched, unless she trusts you completely. She does have a Master that orders her around; Satan. She is legally married to the Demon Lucifer, upon Satan's orders, but does not love him. She has no friends, unless she calls you one herself. What are feelings? She has none, except for the bitter ones.

    >~Lucid~<

    Name: Lucid Fallow
Gender: Female
Species: Slenderman - She is the daughter of The Slenderman, half human, half Slender.
Abilities: She has many abilites, such as the ability to smell souls. She can cause memory loss, nausia, paranioa, and utter fear. She can shift into a fox and manipulate fire. She can also teleport and her tentacles can suffocate her prey if she chooses.
Looks: In her human form, she has long brown hair that curls all the way down to the small of her back. She has a pretty face and doesn't usually wear makeup, and usually wears a graphic tee and jeans, then black combat boots. The only jewelry she wears is a gold necklace with a fox pendant on it. Her father gave it to her on her first birthday and it allows her to shift into a fox. In her half and half form, her hair becomes pure white and eight tentacles sprout from her back, four on each side. In Slender form, she gets taller and has no face, the tentacles beoming more formed and spider like. You do NOT want to see her in Slender form.
Personality: She's insane, sadistic, evil, manipulative, se<_>ductive, crazy, risky, brave, clever, serious, impulsive and short tempered. Get to know her, but be careful. She bites.
Hobbies: Music, chess, flirting, setting things on fire, eating and reading.
Dislikes: Water. Large bodies of it. Nope.
Other: She can shift into a pretty red fox, with a black muzzle and paws and a white belly and tail ending. In the winter, the fox is white.
