An excellent book! I wish I had the information in this book when I started beekeeping. I am recommending this book to beginner beekeepers. I purchased a copy for myself and then I purchased another copy for a friend. The information is well laid out, easy to read and understand. I will be recommending this book a lot because it will really get beginners off to a great start on natural beekeeping. It is much easier to start out chemical free and your bees will love you for it.

This is an excellent book for the beginner beekeeper. It not only tells you everything you need to start beekeeping but it explains the current problems and how to solve these problems naturally. The authors did a great job in laying out the material so it flows smoothly and is easy to find information on a topic. Bee's will benefit from this method of beekeeping.

This is a great book for beekeepers. The whole family has read it and we are all beekeeping now. A great place to start. But also a great book for those who have a bit of experience and are confused. This book brings great clarity to beekeeping. Enjoy!

The book is written by committed and extremely knowledgeable organic bee-keeping enthusiasts. The two negative reviews are aimed at B&N: they're complaining that the preview is the foreward - fair enough, but it shouldn't affect the rating of the content, since the nature of their complain proves they haven't read it.

I thought the only bee books I would ever need were Michael Bush
I thought the only bee books I would ever need were Michael Bush’s books. I have to confess that after I met Dean and Ramona at Dee Lusby’s Oracle Bee conference, and found them interesting and funny-sometimes a bit too funny- Ramona was jealous that a bee had pooped on Dean, and he rubbed it on the hive and timed it to see show fast the bees removed it (she said that Dean had all the fun). Then I discovered that we all have Theremins, (the only musical instrument you play without touching it) and they actually play theirs. Well, I thought it would be polite to buy their book.

I began reading it soon after I got home and found it to be well written, and concise with simply stated information which included explanations of things like what nucs needed in different situations and what do queens actually do in a mating nuc, which I had tried to find out from other sources and never did get an answer. I thought that mating nucs were sort of like a sex slave situation where the queen was confined and drones from who know where could come in and toy with her. Turns out it is sort of like the 60’s movie ‘Where the Boys Are’, the 60’s beach bikini movie where nubile young women rent a place far from home, and go out every night to find love from who knows how many surfer drones, then goes home and lies about going to church regularly, and saving it for marriage.
The book explains the wisdom of no-treating beekeeping but tells what you can do if you face a situation where some intervention may be warranted.
I would recommend this as a first book for new beekeepers, that will give then all they need to know without scaring the heck out of them, and a book for more experienced beekeepers who have been confused or terrified by information from other sources.
I also want to mention that Dee will be having another Oracle conference in March of 2014. Anyone who misses it will be really sorry later. If you only attend one bee conference in your life, this should be the one, and damn the cost, which is quite reasonable but you may need to get there on an airplane or something. Also, I have Michael Bush’s initials on the fanny of my bee suit.

I've known Dean and Laurie for a while. I've heard them speak. I've read their posts on bee forums. So I had high expectations. They were exceeded. Something as complex as bees and beekeeping is very difficult to explain to a complete neophyte as the complexity and interrelatedness of everything makes it difficult to know where to start. I really didn't think anyone could write something so basic and still cover the essentials, but I think they have succeeded beyond any of the hundreds of beginning beekeeping books I've read over the years. Thanks Dean and Laurie for writing this. Now I know where to send a beginner for a book.
