A brilliant performance by one of Austria's greatest writers
Bernhard is one of the great writers of the Modern Age, nearly completely overlooked in America. CONCRETE is his best work. Reading one of his novels is akin to listening to a Bach fugue. Parts repeat for emphasis, and there is much below the surface. For those that criticize Bernhard as being too sophomoric in his diatribes against 'society,' they reveal themselves as reading him too thin. As any studied reader of Bernhard knows, the point of the absurdist attacks is always himself! Bernhard is one of the most misunderstood satirists of modern literature, and a writer of incomprehensible power and tone.
