Don't waste your money!!

So sorry I didn't read reviews before purchasing!!! The re-hash is too boring!! First Tanenbaum I'm not going to finish!!

One question? Who wrote this book?!

After reading all of Robert Tanenbaum's previous books, I was excited when I saw 'Counterplay' at the book store and immediately purchased the book based on my prior positive experiences. BIG MISTAKE! Either Robert has a whole new personality and writing style, or he did not write this. I am at page 41, I feel I have given this book all of the time it deserves. So far, I have had every character rehashed, and the converstaion style is not at all the same as last reads. My eyes actually glazed over at one point. Understanding that Robert is a fellow NYer I should track him down and demand my money back. I should have read the reviews for this prior, but once again, in the past I had not been disappointed. Please read this and don't waste your time or money.

Overstuffed turkey of a tale

Having read, and appreciated all of the previous Tannenbaum books featuring Karp and clan,I have to say this book was nearly unreadable. With incessant references to and recaps of past plots and characters with dizzying detail, reading this book is like slogging through a finals exam of everything that ever occurred in this series. Its meandering plot and huge leaps in implausibility build to a deliberately constructed 'cliffhanger' ending- which in fact, leaves this reader cold and uninterested. Has the author decided to wrap up the series and throw everything and the kitchen sink into this one? What a mess. Fan of the series or not, avoid this one- it's waay too much work for waay too little enjoyment

What Happened?

If not for the characters, I had to keep reminding myself that this was a Tanenbaum novel. A boring rehash of previous Butch Karp's and too much pontificating.

Another Cliffhanger from Tannenbaum

'Counterplay' is a taut, complex thriller, as are all the books in the Karp/Ciampi series. However, the internal inconsistencies that have appeared in the last four books are becoming annoying. Clearly the person(s) who have taken over the actual writing job from Mr. Tannenbaum have not taken the trouble to read the backlist. Dog breeds have been changed (Neapolitan Mastiff to Presa Canario), character names (Rachel Rachman started out as Laura Rachman), professions altered (Marlene Ciampi's father was a plumber, not a grocer/florist). I don't mind that the books are being 'ghosted', I mind that they are being ghosted incompetently. Still, taken as a 'stand alone' and not part of a continuing series, 'Counterplay' is an exciting read.

Unbelievable, too much Kane, too many rising from the dead!!

I started out really enjoying Tannebaum's series with Butch and Marlene but the last few have just been shoot 'em up, kidnap a Karp kid and bring the undead in to save one of the family. The plots are dizzying and if you hadn't read previous books you would never figure out who the heck is who! John Jojola's death was clearly not permanent and I suppose we will have to go through the same thing with Butch's being shot at the end of this novel. To tell you the truth - I will probably miss it. I am tired of Kane, St. Lucy and the whole clan.

Another enjoyable 'Butch Karp' tale . . . . .

I am a 'Butch Karp' addict. As soon as I finish one book, I await the next issue with baited breath. I adore the entire Karp/Ciampi clan . . .Lucy, the twins, and all other miscellaneous characters. I especially appreciate 'Dirty Warren' - please put more of him in your Karp stories. However, I have to be honest and tell you that I am beginning to feel the 'Ick' of this Andrew Kane and dearly wish you would get rid of him as I am not sure I can sit through another read with his omnipotent self - to revisit him would be like beating a dead horse.

Unputdownable

Andrew Kane was a shoe-in to become the next mayor of New York City but New York District Attorney Roger ¿Butch¿ Karp exposed him for the master criminal he is. He has minions working for him within the police department, the Catholic Church, and the city government. Now he is on his way to be tested at a private psychiatric facility to see if he can get off on an insanity plea. The car stops by an overturned a school bus but it is a trap set by his allies to free Kane.-------------- Kane is working with al Qaeda agents to hit a target that will cause the world as much pain as 9/11 did. He is needed for his connections to make the incident happen and in return he has been promised a fortune and a place to live. Kane also has another goal: to kill the people Karp loves, including his wife, children, and friends before killing the district attorney. Many people die including young children making Butch determined to figure out what Kane is planning and stop it before more innocents are killed an unusual band are working to help him including a homeless man who lives in the subway tunnels.---------------- Though a bit over the top, there is plenty of action in this exciting police procedural. The characters in COUNTER PLAY are well developed and readers will find it hard to figure out who are the villains masquerading as priests and law enforcement and who are the truly good men and women who will lay down their lives if necessary to stop Kane and the terrorists. Robert K. Tanenbaum keeps writing enthralling tales that are full of red herrings and unexpected curves.----------------- Harriet Klausner
