The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes

Such a sweet and timeless story!

I only like to invest in buying books with quality stories for my six year old's library. "The Country Bunny" definitely qualifies! The story, which was first published 70 years ago (!!), is timeless. It does not have what I call the "chew up and spit out", glitzy feel of a lot of books written for children today. Kids actually have to sit still and pay attention to the story for more than five minutes to appreciate its beauty.

Being a mom of a little girl, I value strong female characters in literature. The protagonist of this story is a wonderful role model. Now you'll just have to read the book and find out why...

Wonderful classic, great pictures

My parents read this book to me when I was young and now I'm reading it to my children. It's best for ages 3+ because of the text to picture ratio but it's a great story and the pictures stick in your memory because they are so classic 1930's!

Wonderful story, horrible binding

This story is lovely and one of my favorites. However, the book I just received is bound upside down. How does that happen?? Is no one checking the books that are sent out?? I was planning to include this book in my child's Easter basket, but there is no way I will receive a new one by then. I am very disappointed, as this is the first bad experience I've had with Barnes and Noble.

Classic

This classic makes a wonderful baby gift. I enjoy reading it as much as an adult as I did as a child. The idea of a mother bunny putting her dreams on hold for her little ones is a theme any mother can relate to. We may not be able to train our little humans as well as she does her bunnies, but it's consistently inspiring nonetheless. The illustrations are beautiful.

Perfect for Children of all ages . . . very timely.

From the Holy City, Charleston, SC, comes a timely tale that champions a single mother, love of family, tenacity, and triumph of the underdog (rabbit!) This book, written and extremely popular in the late 1930's, boldly expresses a truth for all the ages. DuBose Heyward's appreciation for the strength of women and for people of color was far ahead of the mindset during the times in which he lived.

This favorite Easter story told over and over to his daughter, Jenifer DuBose Heyward, was published at the request of a friend. When Mr. Heyward sent word to Jenifer that "her" story would be published, he enclosed a dollar for her grandmother to help Jenifer celebrate the event with a party for her friends. Grandmother read the yet-to-be published book aloud at that party.

Mrs. DuBose Heyward (Dorothy) later told a friend that Mr. Heyward's time spent penning THE COUNTRY BUNNY, was the most lucrative two hours of his writing career! (It was at Dorothy's encouragement that Mr. Heyward's book PORGY was re-written as a stage production, which caught the eye of George Gershwin, and PORGY & BESS followed.)

THE COUNTRY BUNNY should be in every classroom, and read and re-read to children as an example of determination in following their dreams.

Wonderful child's booook!

My 6 grandchildren loved the story and enjoyed hearing it. It started many observations and talk of their own ideas about the little country bunny

It's a classic

I read this book to my children when they were little now my grandchildren are also enjoying this book. Cuddle up with a child or your inner child and enjoy this book.

A childhood favorite...

This was one of my favorite's as a child and I am so glad to be able to share it with my children. We take it out every year at Easter time. It is a great lesson for children --you don't have to be the biggest or the fastest to succeed. A kind heart and using your own talents will allow you to realize your dreams.

Unforgettable

Such a great story to share with your children, a must have for all family libraries - a must read - for the generations. We first read repeatedly from the children's department of our public library and never found it available for purchase. I was so excited to see it now available at Barnes and Noble! I purchased for our collection - my 21 year old was so excited! It's a story with warm fuzzies, plenty of good memories, and good reading year round.

What a wonderful book!

I had this book as a child and was thrilled to find it for my daughter. It is an early feminist tale without being too "girl power." The theme is that the Country Bunny can do everything that the male bunnies can do even though she has many children. She works hard and is successful even though she has a large family and many responsibilities at home.
The characters are wonderfully written and illustrated.
I have bought this for all of my friends' daughters.
It is, however, a bit too long for younger children. It is better suited for children beyond preschool.

A cute story for children

Everyone seems to emphasize the 'feminist' nature of this book. I just think that it is a great tale about the importance of hard work, courage, and perseverance for all youngsters.

A feminist fairy tale

This is a story written for young children, but adults can enjoy it as well. It centers around a female rabbit who wants to be the Easter Bunny but is told that she cannot. She goes on to other things, but never forgets her desire to be Easter Bunny. When the opportunity to be Easter Bunny finally arises, she has some obstacles to overcome, which she does with the help of others and by believing in herself. This is a wonderful story with a feminist point of view. Even though it was written in 1939, the message is very timely for today. The book is also full of beautiful illustrations!

A Great Easter Book for Boys & Girls

This was one of my childhood favorites that was also one of my mother's. I have enjoyed reading it to my nieces and nephews and hope to share it with many future generations. It's tough to believe that the book was written so long ago because it tells such a feminist tale in which the kind and generous mother bunny from the country does what the fast and strong male bunnies from the city cannot accomplish.

CLASSIC - A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY CHILD'S LIBRARY!

I'm a 27 year old stay at home mother of two, ages 8 and 3. This was one of my absolute FAVORITE books when I was a child. Now I'm buying it to pass on to my own children. This is a book that will be loved for generations to come!

Mommies can do anything!

What a lovely book! It was one of my favorites as a girl, and I am looking forward to reading it to my two young boys. It is a wonderful story about a Mommy Bunny who longs to be an Easter Bunny. She refuses to be intimidated by the faster, sleeker Jack Rabbits, who tell her she can't possibly be one of the Easter Bunnies. Her strengths as a mother come shining through, and she is chosen to be one of the Easter Bunnies. She is given the task of delivering an egg to a sick child at the top of a very high mountain, and although she tries and tries, she cannot climb the mountain. The head Easter Bunny recognizes her determination and heart, and gives her a pair of golden shoes that carry her up the mountain to the little boy. This is a wonderful example of a Mommy who can do it all! It is an inspiring tale for not only little ones, but mothers who sometimes feel underappreciated!

OLDIE BUT GOODIE

I believe the book is older than the publishing date. I'm 63 and had it read to me as a child. I taught first grade for 37 years and read it to my class for most of those years. It is fun for the imagination. It is not necessary to view the pictures because a child can form their own images.

A must read for the Easter season!

This is a classic and wonderful story of courage with a female heroine. My parents read this book to my siblings and I every Easter and now I am purchasing it to read to my niece. The title character is a country bunny among male, city bunnies and shows that one person (bunny) can make a difference. A wonderful story that should be read to all children during the Easter season.

a story that lives in the heart

I remember reading this story when I was a little girl. It became an Easter tradition for me, and hopefully through buying this book for my own children they will love it as much as I do. Even adults will find that this tale reaches out to the child in you.
