    Best New Act Of 2010?

If a 1960's girl group picked up guitars and listened to The Jesus And Mary Chain, they might have sounded like The Raveonettes. Or if they lived in California, they would have sounded more like Best Coast. At the time Best Coast recorded "Crazy For You", they were just singer-guitarist-songwriter Bethany Constantino and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno (Bruno has since left the band only to be replaced by a bassist and a drummer). Like many old-fashioned girl groups, Best Coast creates a gloriously simple music and a not-too-innocent vibe. Add a little feedback against an echoey, cavernous sound and you get this album. The lead song, "Boyfriend" sounds like the best guitar-based rock song that Phil Spector never produced, while "Each and Every Day" starts out easy and ends with a blistering feedback climax. There's an extra track here as well: "When I'm With You", probably the best song they've done so far. Sure, this record is about summer, sun, boyfriends and pussycats. But considering the fact that most young singers today sound almost exactly the same, it's reassuring to see someone like Bethany Constantino stand out in a big way. This alone makes Best Coast one of the best new acts of 2010. Keep an eye on them. Or at least on Bethany.
