Overview

At 22, Leslie Morgan Steiner seemed to have it all: good looks, a Harvard diploma, a glamorous job in New York City. Plus a handsome, funny boyfriend who adored her. But behind her façade of success, this golden girl hid a dark secret. She'd made a mistake shared by millions: she fell in love with the wrong person.

At first, Leslie and Conor seemed perfect together. Then came the fights she tried to ignore: he pushed her down the stairs, choked her during an argument, and threatened her with a gun. Several times, he came close to making good on his threat to kill her. With each attack, Leslie lost another piece of herself. Why didn't she leave? She stayed because she loved him. Gripping and utterly compelling, Crazy Love takes you inside the violent, devastating world of abusive love and makes you feel the power and powerlessness of abuse that can take place anywhere and to anyone. Crazy Love draws you in — and never lets you go.

Read an Excerpt

“If you and I met at one of our children's birthday parties, in the hallway at work, or at a neighbor's barbecue, you'd never guess my secret: that as a young woman I fell in love with and married a man who beat me regularly and nearly killed me. I was always tensed for my next mistake, his next attack. The only person I was hiding the truth from was myself.” – from Crazy Love

Reading Group Guide

1. When you imagine a woman trapped in a destructive relationship, what images come to mind? How old is she? Are there children involved? What does she look like and where does she live?
2. Describe our cultural stereotypes about someone who can't leave an abusive partner. How does Leslie compare to these stereotypes?
3. People often assume that low self-esteem is one reason women become ensnared in abusive relationships. Is this what Leslie experienced?
4. Have you ever been in a relationship that seemed to be turning abusive? What were the warning signs?
5. Why do you think some people pay attention to the red flags in romantic relationships, and others minimize or deny them? What was the first warning sign that you noticed in Crazy Love — and why did Leslie miss it?
6. Why do you think Leslie stayed after Conor began physically abusing her before their wedding? Why do you think Conor stayed?
7. Why couldn't Leslie confide in trusted friends or family when Conor became violent? Do you think this is how many women feel in this type of situation?
8. Like many abusers, Conor was a victim himself as a small boy, and he knew personally how damaging physical abuse is at the hands of someone you love. Were you surprised that this knowledge did not help Conor overcome his tendencies towards violence?
9. Statistics show that the most dangerous period for an abuse victim is when they try to leave. Why might this be? How can women and domestic violence advocates use this information to help more victims escape safely and permanently?
10. Was reading Crazy Love more or less disturbing than you imagined beforehand? Why or why not?
